This trick is often used by experienced travelers - use a laptop that doesn't host an internal hard drive, instead using an external hard drive or USB thumb drive to host the operating system. This is key to preventing data loss should your laptop be stolen - no thief will take the time to examine a laptop for an HDD; most won't even realize what's wrong when the stolen device fails to work. This method works very simply - your OS is installed on the external device, and your data is saved to that location. You plug it in before starting the computer, use it to do all your work, and then shut the system down and unplug the device, slipping it into a pocket or bag. If you are interested in running your laptop with out a hard drive, the following operating systems can be used. All of them will run off a USB or external hard drive and are simple to install.
Pendrivelinux - This is an actual Linux distro and was made specifically for what the name states - to run easily and cleanly off a pen drive. It has a nice, simple interface and slightly disturbing wallpaper. It is a basic distro, and will do everything the average user will want it to do.
DSL and Puppy Linux - these two operating systems are marvelous for those who require a minimalistic, small file-size operating system that is easy to use. DSL is only 50MB, while Puppy Linux is more robust and has better eye candy.
Knoppix - Knoppix is based on Debian, and is nearly 2GB in size. This is because it is loaded with nearly every software application you could ever need. You will be hard pressed to find an app you need that isn't included in this OS. Knoppix is ideal if you want to get started fast without having to download many apps.
Fedora 9 - It is easier than ever to install Fedora 9 to an external device. It has a simple, clean wizard that does all the work for you, and it works wonderfully, requiring virtually no tech knowledge. Fedora is a sophisticated OS, and is ideal for those who will be using the machine often and intensely.
