4. Shoes – A good and durable pair of boots or tennis shoes would be an invaluable gift to a homeless person. I know we all take this simple luxury for granted when I see how
many homeless people walk. I honestly do not know if it is from poor nutrition or a harsh environment, but I often notice many homeless people seem to have foot problems. It almost seems like their feet hurt them when they walk. Some even have a pronounced limp.

5. First Aid Kit – This is a simple and lightweight item that would help any homeless person. You can buy great first aid kits for rout $10 at almost any drugstore. This simple gift would be priceless to a homeless person. I would not go for a bulky fist aid kit because they will have to carry it around with them. Look for something small that would fit into a pocket or a bag.

6. Shaving Kit – I use shaving kit loosely. Basically any toiletries that might be handy. From handy wipes to simple tissues are all very useful.

7. Tooth brush and tooth paste – This is a simple and very affordable gift anyone can easily afford to give to a homeless person.

8. Sunglasses – This is a very simple and useful gift. Many homeless people are exposed to a variety of environmental elements. Something as simple as sunglasses can make life little easier.

9. Pre-paid food cards – At almost any fast food restaurant you can buy prepaid cards that would make a great gift for a homeless person. This would give them the opportunity to buy food, as they need it.

10. Stationary – Ok, I don’t mean some stationary with fancy letterhead and their name on it. I mean what about a small bag filled with writing paper, a few pens, and even some pre stamped envelopes. You never know who a homeless person may wish they could get in contact with. Long lost family that they have been estranged from is probably a huge part of many home less people’s lives.

I know a lot of these items a homeless person could go to a food bank or homeless shelter for, but sometimes just handing the gift of food, money or clothing is far more personal then dropping off a box of stuff.

I love it. Some of these gifts never dawned on me. But it makes very good sense.
Awesome list :) I fully agree with all of this. Another thing that is very helpful is a sewing kit. Nothing huge and bulky but one of those little inexpensive ones that look like they come in a matchbook case. I go out every week to pass out a variety of these things to the homeless that live in the downtown San Diego area and you'd be surprised as to how often this simple gift has been brought up of being needed. With such a limited supply of clothes it helps to keep the holes stitched up to ensure the hole doesn't get too large.
"I often notice many homeless people seem to have foot problems. It almost seems like their feet hurt them when they walk. Some even have a pronounced limp. " Much of this is due to the fact that many homeless people are disabled people (physically ill or injured people unable to work) who've fallen victim to the Social Security Disability process. It can take months or years to be approved, meanwhile, disabled people with no family or supportive friends use up their savings just paying their bills and become homeless once the money is gone. This is often after years of gainful employment and being forced to pay Social Security Disability "Insurance" which is designed not to be collected.
Great article. Being homeless can be very difficult for people.
Food's probably the best you can give someone. I once saw this poor girl while in the city. She had a sleeping bag with her and was trying to pack it into a backpack. Me and my mum helped her get the sleeping bag into the backpack, and then we took her to this nice little cafe for lunch. I spent about $10 on the lunch for her, but I didn't care. It felt good, so I did it. Sucks be to he who said that 'all good things in life are illegal, immoral or fattening'!
This is the best list of what to give homeless people. I especially like the food tip.
