Double Diabetes:The New Health Risk

What is Double Diabetes?

There is a new threat to our health, it’s known as Double Diabetes. This recent discovery is said to be from people showing the signs and symptoms of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is when the body cannot produce enough insulin, so they have to have insulin shots to help them use the glucose (sugar) they take in when eating. This from of diabetes is usually discovered in children and young adults, but
now its being seen in older adult as well. Some symptoms of type 1 diabetes would include,
a) Extreme thirst
b) Having to go to the bathroom more then usual.
c) Vision problems
d) Nausea and vomiting
e) Feeling weak
f) Mood swings
There are more symptoms of type 1 diabetes, but these are the ones most experienced.

Type 2 diabetes is the form diagnosed most often. It occurs when the body can’t use the insulin it produces. So in return it keeps producing more and more insulin. A person with type 2 diabetes may feel tired all the time from the lack of energy. This is caused because their cells are not able to use the energy from the glucose they have in their body. This is called Insulin resistance. Type 2 diabetes tends to run in families.

Some symptoms of type 2 diabetes would include
a) Being thirsty all the time
b) Having to use the bathroom more then usual.
c) Feeling hungry all the time
d) Losing weight even if not trying.
e) Tired all the time
f) Vision problems
g) Frequent headaches

There are several other symptoms of type 2 diabetes. If you have them you should see a Dr. right away. Type 2 diabetes left untreated can lead to other problems with your kidneys, eyes, heart, nerves and places you at a higher risk for a heart attack or stroke.

I learned about this doing research for the Diabetes Library at http://diabetes.boomja.com. I have been diagnosed as Type II Diabetes and have been being treated for it for the past 9 years, mostly unsuccessfully. Because one of my parents was Type I and one was Type II, I am very interested in discussing with my doctor whether I could have Double Diabetes.

Wow! Thanks for the warning. I had never heard of this. Some of friends and family are diabetic, though, and one of my friend's husbands has juvenile diabetes. I will have to tell her about this next time I see her.

Wow! I wonder how much our sugar-heavy diets have to do with this recent development. I was recently reading an article about how more people are borderline type 2 than ever before!

My husband is in end-stage renal failure from this. It's really nasty stuff!
