Every season has its fashions that make you sit up and say, “Huh?” Who actually decides that some of these looks would be great on women? Is it some designer that was struggling in mainstream fashion and decided to see just how funky a pair of pants could be? Whatever the etiology of the look, this winter is no different when it comes to fashion trends every woman should ignore. It seems we have finally outlived the belly shirt and the misguided concept that bra straps can show if they match the top. Now that women’s blouses and jackets have returned to more feminine silhouettes, the fashions from the waist down have taken a nose dive. Surely this winter’s worst fashions can’t last more than one season!

Leggings with skirts or dresses
This season’s leggings with dresses are painfully reminiscent of a bad ‘80s dance movie. The trend is apparently to wear either a long shirt or short dress, put on a pair of skin tight leggings, and then don four-inch heels or ballet flats with more glitter and rhinestones than Elton John’s sunglasses. This look gets a worst fashion award on the “ridiculous” merit. To the casual passer-by, it looks as if the fashion victim was having a bad day, couldn’t decide whether to wear pants or a skirt, and just threw on both and ran out the door thirty minutes late. These leggings often stop mid-calf or just above the ankle. Paying $125.00 for a pair at Neiman Marcus does not change the fact that no woman, no matter her size, has attractive legs from mid-calf down. So, pants or skirts, ladies. Pick one, not both.

Bubble skirts look good on no one

Takeaways
  • No body type begs for a "flattering" bubble skirt.
  • Patent leather boots send one message: for hire.
  • Wear one trend at a time paired with more classic pieces for a well-balanced outfit.
Did You Know?
Fashion is highly subjective. Many celebrities have made one "best dressed" list and another "worst dressed" list with the same outfit.

Leggings are not always that bad, and happen to look good with the RIGHT type of skirts or extrememly long shirts. You just have to know how to wear them. But everyone's opinion is different...

i happen to have very attractive, lean and sexy legs at 44. i loved leggings in the eighties but would only wear them sparingly when dressing funky to watch my boyfriends band play or something. other than that, leave them to the under 20 crowd

oh shut up, i love leggings! you're just jealous because you're not brave enough to re-embrace something that went "out" in the 80's, hahaha. get over yourself. wait...i just realized something looking at your picture. what are you, 50? you shouldn't even be THINKING about those fashions anyway, of course you can't wear trendy stuff, you're too old! go review a martha stewart article or something.

I love this! Good roundup. I do like leggings, though. I loved them in teh 80s and I still think they look good. I think I'm too old for them now, though. Sigh.

Well written article Amy. Since I'm a SAHM and in my early 40's (41) I can't see myself perusing fashion mag's for the lastest fashions. I'm still a jeans and T-Shirt type of gal.

I agree with the bubble skirt... I wore bubble minis in the 80's... because they were minis they made my butt look huge. I would not wear them again, or buy them for my daughter.

You know, I have to say I enjoy the leggings. Anyways, because I know it's a "trend" I bought mine for a whopping $10 at Target and have fun wearing them under some of my designer pieces.
