Will Smith Says Open Marriage is the Key to Success

Can an Open Marriage Work?

Hollywood's Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith have been married since 1997. In an interview with the UK magazine Reveal, Will Smith credits his successful relationship to having an open marriage. As he explains it, "Our perspective is, you don't avoid what's natural and

you're going to be attracted to people." Will Smith and Jada Pinkett also stress the importance of honesty. When he wants to have sex with someone, he would ask her for permission. He wouldn't do it unless she approved. The same rule applies to Jada. When Will Smith and Jada Pinkett exchanged vows, they never used the words "forsaking all others." Can such a relationship work? While there are two sides to the issue, I see more cons than pros to an open marriage.

One advantage to Will and Jada Pinkett Smith's open marriage is honesty. As Will Smith explains, "I don't know how I'd feel."

Another advantage to Will and Jada Pinkett Smith's non-exclusive relationship is the 'best of both worlds' experience. Will and Jada Pinkett Smith seem to be happy together. They have been together for over ten years and have two children together (and a third from a previous marriage). In public appearances, their body language is open and affectionate. Their non-exclusive relationship seems to be the best of both worlds: they have the emotional trust while still being able to act on their natural instincts.

Yet there are problems with an open marriage. Having affairs, even in the most open and honest relationships, can lead to emotional and physical entanglements as well as complicated love triangles. Can Will and Jada remain loyal to each other if they are emotionally and physically involved with other people? Will and Jada Pinkett Smith may not be setting the best example for their children. Seeing mom and dad having affairs does provide the most stable environment.

If you think "One of the cornerstones of marriage lies in fidelity, the security of knowing that your spouse would never think of looking at anyone else." Then your marriage is doomed. Putting a ring on a finger does not eliminate attraction to others, it just, at best, curtails the pursuit. One of the biggest problems that causes relationships to fail is that people are not honest about heir attractions and then they find themselves clearing the office desk with their secretary or boss. If instead, people would acknowledge their attractions then they are in a better place to deal with them. If this works for Will and Jada more power to them.

Does open marriage mens they go for both men and women..but the rumours have floated around that he has been with men so is it open or is the dude just flat out gay and she is allowed to get her needs met by being with other men? Also what made him spill the beans..To prevent being balckmailed and extorted by one of their "affairs"??? Of course they are not going to divorce that would be one of the biggest Hollywood divorces ever...They have the freedom to do as they please. Only question is what about social diseases and the risk of being exposed to HIV/Aids?

I don't know if I could do this. I know all the moral implications but aside from that =, I just don't know if ona personal level, I could trust that I would be okay with my husband and or wife being so attracted to someone that they felt they had to act on it. Of course the elements of desire and attraction are very powerful, so maybe we fool loruselves into believing that fidelity is achievable. Great article Tina.
