2008 Fantasy Football Sleepers: Running Back
Here are 10 players who enter the 2008 Fantasy Football season as major sleeper picks at running back.
#1 - Julius Jones - Seattle Seahawks
Understanding Julius Jones is this simple. If he gets carries he will score points, if he doesn't get carries he's nothing more than a move the chains type of back that is virtually useless in fantasy leagues. With the departure of Shaun Alexander, Julius Jones finally has a chance to be a number one featured running back. However this is assuming Maurice Morris or TJ Duckett don't take too many carries or goal line attempts away. If Jones is the guy to get all the carries, he will be a top 10 fantasy running back by season's end, and he probably wont get drafted in the top 20 running backs taken come draft day.
#2 - Ryan Torain - Denver Broncos
It seems that every year a Denver Broncos running back comes out of nowhere and rocks the fantasy football world. If current starting running back Selvin Young can't handle the load in Denver, then the next young stud in the pecking order is rookie Ryan Torain. My suggestion is that if you draft Selvin Young, you better draft Ryan Torain as well. One of them will be the number one guy each week and put up great fantasy stats.
#3 - Steve Slaton - Houston Texans
With Ahman Green getting older and injuries starting to rattle his career, rookie Steve Slaton may have a great opportunity to be used in a Reggie Bush fashion. Slaton is small and lightening quick, which makes him extremely hard to tackle and catch when he is in the open field. He is worth a late round flyer pick if for some reason you draft Ahman Green.
Super Sleepers
#1 - Jacob Hester - San Diego Chargers
In past years I never worried about landing the ever-popular 'handcuff' pick at running back. However if the team is talented enough and the running back position is relied upon heavily in the offense, then I see no reason how selecting a handcuff player cannot be beneficial for your team. In other words, if you draft LaDainain Tomlinson and are somewhat worried about his health and possible declining number of carries, then rookie Jacob Hester is one big-time running back you will want to keep an eye on.
