Right now my daughter pretty much things that writing poetry is "lame." While my son understands it a bit better, he doesn't totally get it either. I've been writing and compiling poetry for my children since I first started writing in my early teens. I had hoped that it would somehow reach them so they could understand that stuffy old mom and dad went through many of the same emotions, problems, and heartaches that they faced in their own lives.

I wrote this poem to my daughter who never seems to understand the depth of my feelings for her. We are very different. I tend to be shy and introverted where she is assertive and extroverted. Consequently, we often clash; not because we don't love one another, but because we communicate so differently. We miss each other's hidden messages and read each other the wrong way. However, maybe someday something like this poem will register and let her know how very much she is, was, and will always be loved.

My tears fall like cold raindrops
From inside my broken heart.
The hole in my soul widens
Whenever we are apart.

My thoughts begin to race wildly
Throughout the maze of my brain;
Seeking some kind of conclusion
That will explain away this pain.

A part of me feels missing;
Like I have been torn into.
I can't even imagine
A life that didn't include you.

We're not always connected
The way that family should be.
There were times when I wonder
If you actually hate me.

But still my love grows stronger
With the passing of each day
And I thank my Creator
Because he sent you my way.

For there is no bond stronger
Than that of mother and child;
It's love unconditional;
Untamed, untethered, and wild.

Should I pass on tomorrow
This one thing I want you to know:
You were my greatest treasure
Because your love made it so.

Ahhh. You are an excellent poet, especially dealing with everyday subjects that are universal. You daughter is lucky, she will come around. My two kids did. My son is actually quite the poet, although not in my style, but his own. :-) *****

Most of my poetry has been written to or for more children. One son carries a poem I wrote in his wallet!

Powerful and moving. She'll "get it" one day. I think it is a beautiful idea to compose and keep poetry for your children.

Writing is an excellent way to express our deepest feelings when spoken language just does not communicate it the way its meant. Your daughter appears to understand and related to behavior rather than actions and will one day realize that its okay to be different from your parent; Communication is different; even among family members. She will know that her way and your way of expressions are both right and your behavior is to use your creative writing and her way is yet to be fulfilled in artform. Healing is a long winding road but in its own time brings us rainbows of love; sometimes unspoken emotion is deeper than spoken; thanks so much for sharing who you are; and may you and your daughter soon bond with your own individual ways of sharing with each other the love only a mother an daughter can share.
