Right now my daughter pretty much things that writing poetry is "lame." While my son understands it a bit better, he doesn't totally get it either. I've been writing and compiling poetry for my children since I first started writing in my early teens. I had hoped that it would somehow reach them so they could understand that stuffy old mom and dad went through many of the same emotions, problems, and heartaches that they faced in their own lives. I wrote this poem to my daughter who never seems to understand the depth of my feelings for her. We are very different. I tend to be shy and introverted where she is assertive and extroverted. Consequently, we often clash; not because we don't love one another, but because we communicate so differently. We miss each other's hidden messages and read each other the wrong way. However, maybe someday something like this poem will register and let her know how very much she is, was, and will always be loved.
My tears fall like cold raindrops
From inside my broken heart.
The hole in my soul widens
Whenever we are apart.
My thoughts begin to race wildly
Throughout the maze of my brain;
Seeking some kind of conclusion
That will explain away this pain.
A part of me feels missing;
Like I have been torn into.
I can't even imagine
A life that didn't include you.
We're not always connected
The way that family should be.
There were times when I wonder
If you actually hate me.
But still my love grows stronger
With the passing of each day
And I thank my Creator
Because he sent you my way.
For there is no bond stronger
Than that of mother and child;
It's love unconditional;
Untamed, untethered, and wild.
Should I pass on tomorrow
This one thing I want you to know:
You were my greatest treasure
Because your love made it so.
