Law enforcement jobs are very stressful and can be quite depressing at times. After spending a long day dealing with troubled and sometimes dangerous individuals, the need to vent at home with loved ones can be quite strong and ultimately very therapeutic. However, is it a good idea to talk about the details of your law enforcement job while your children are present? This article will offer points to consider before sharing specific details about your day at work in front of your children.

Your Children May Worry About Your Safety. If you come from a day at your law enforcement job and share a detailed account about how an inmate or person taken into custody refused to comply with instructions and you wound up in a bit of a scuffle, your children may become concerned and anxious about what you do for a living and become stressed every time you leave for work. Hearing about the dangerous incidents that are few and far between, may cause your children to think that every day is wrought with danger. This will certainly be harmful for your children and affect their sense of security.

Your Children May Think The World Is A More Dangerous Place Than It Really Is. Yes, terrible and tragic things happen every day to innocent people. Unfortunately, even the most story book communities have their share of criminals. A daily recount of the many troubled individuals you encounter every day may lead your children to believe that danger is around every corner and that most people can not be trusted. Although the world can be very scary, most people are good, caring individuals who follow the law. Listening to disturbing stories about your law enforcement job on a daily basis may give your children a skewed opinion of the world and cause them to be cynical and untrusting.

Seems the trick is more what you say than whether to talk about it.
