Not often does a television show fandom receive the notoriety the fans of now-cancelled CBS serial drama, Jericho, have received. Not content to allow the show to die, fans have waged two battles to have their beloved show renewed. The first battle involving 20 tons of nuts resulted in a shortened second season renewal. However, CBS again refused to renew the show, which has developed a close-knit and productive fan following.

The self-named Jericho Rangers have done much more than fight for a TV show. They have used their collective energy and knowledge to support numerous charitable efforts. Most of these efforts have involved the state of Kansas, home of the fictionalized town of Jericho.

During the first renewal fight, fans joined with retailer NutsOnline.com to raise more than $20,000 to help rebuild the town of Greensburg, Kansas which had been devastated by a tornado. The small town reminded many fans of the type of town Jericho might have been, and the efforts became an appropriate outlet for the fans' desire to help others. The more recent Spread the Nutty Love campaign encouraged the donation of 378 jars of peanut butter, plus several other types of non-perishable food items, to the Kansas City Food Bank.

The military troops, particularly those deployed, have also benefited from the Rangers' generosity. DVDs for the Troops raised funds to send DVDs of Jericho Season 1 and Season 2 to deployed military troops. One young fan even took the mission to school, encouraging her classmates to help raise money to contribute to DVDs for the Troops. The DVDs provide a source of entertainment for deployed service member. Each was accompanied by words of encouragement and support from the Jericho fans. A note sent with the Season 2 DVDs also included messages from Jericho producers and crew. Besides the organized support efforts, numerous fans have donated to causes such as the Red Cross and sent care packages to deployed troops in the name of Jericho.

Thank you for showing there's more to Jericho fans than just loving a show -- we also care about people. And yeah, we REALLY love the show, too. : )

Thank-you for the wonderful article on the Jericho Rangers. Not only are these fans fighting for a show they believe in, but they are taking the Jericho spirit of pulling together and compassion to help others in need. This makes a powerful statement of the good the Jericho storyline has brought out, in already wonderful, giving people. Thank-you Jericho production team, writers, cast, crew and fans for setting an example of what things can be done when a group works together to better the lives of others.

The money that the Jericho Fans have spent so far should also show any potential networks or advertisers that these fans are willing to part with their money for their beloved show. These fans are the most avid and loyal fans I have ever heard of. That ought to say somethink about how great of show Jericho is.

RE: Jericho Fan Support Charitable Efforts While Fighting for Renewal By R. Endter, published Jul 12, 2008 Thank you, R. for your article on the "Jericho Rangers" fandom. Isn't it amazing what they've done, not only for the show but for others? Donating 32K to charitable interests is unheard of. I know of many major corporations that don't do nearly that much yearly for their budgets. I think given the community work and what they've done to get someone to adopt their show: the billboard, the ad's in Variety and Hollywood Reporter, and the Television Commercial they created, produced, and had voiced by Brad Beyer (Stanley) played on LA cable stations they might well have made history again! They aren't just any fan group, that's for sure.
