Food Product Review: South Beach Living Caprese Style Chicken

Served on a Plate, They'll Never Know It's a Frozen Dinner

South Beach Living could please even the most demanding foodie with its Caprese Style Chicken, a popular staple in Kraft's South Beach Living frozen dinner line, which provides high protein, quality carb meals for people too busy to cook.
You don't even have to be on the South Beach Diet to appreciate the impressive nutritional stats of South Beach Living frozen entrees. The Caprese Style Chicken, for instance, has only 240 calories, 3 grams of fiber and a whopping 30 grams of protein--a great lunch or dinner option no matter what "diet" you follow.

I stock up on South Beach Living Caprese Style Chicken dinners whenever they are on sale at my local Bel Air or Raley's supermarket. Although they are still more expensive than Smart Ones or Lean Cuisines, the advantage to South Beach Living Caprese Style Chicken is that it is edible and tastes like real food, the kind you might cook yourself if you had the time. And when you think about it, if you had to go out and purchase the ingredients yourself---the chicken breast, the broccoli, the marinara sauce--it would cost you more than the $3 or so for which you can purchase a ready-to-heat-and-eat package on sale.

Not being a huge believer in weight loss diets, I consider South Beach Living Caprese Style Chicken a healthy food option rather than a diet meal, something to eat when I am too busy, tired or lazy to cook. To make the meal even healthier, I often microwave a big bowl of fresh or frozen veggies first and then pour the chicken and broccoli over it. Theoretically, one could even cook up a small batch of high fiber pasta, brown rice or other whole grain and mix that in, too, although that may feel too much like cooking and defeat the purpose of the convenience food concept.

What's good

+ The high quality and cheesy marinara sauce make this almost Olive Garden quality.

+ Broccoli is al dente, does not taste frozen or like something served at a nursing home.

What's not so good

- High sodium content (650 mg)

- Price (relative to other frozen entrees)

Second opinion:

Thanks for the review, I just started the SBD a couple of days ago and now I can see the benefits of buying one of these meals. It certainly sounds more appealing than eating yet another boring chicken breast :)
