Finding a job in West Virginia can be a daunting task. With economic problems being the norm rather than the exception, jobs in West Virginia are always tight. However by utilizing the information in this article you should be to make a more effective job hunt.

The first place to start any job hunt in West Virginia is with those that you know. This is a small state that relies on word of mouth and personal relationships more than more urban areas. You don't have to call everyone you know and ask for a job, but rather make certain that they know you are looking. Make sure everyone knows, your preacher, barber, friends, family, neighbors, etc. If you are unemployed take any job that you can find. You never know who you might meet working in a fast food place or a gas station.

You also need to register at Job Service.

Visit the large employers in your area and see what job openings that they might have. Places such as the Board of Education, local hospitals, and banks need a variety of workers. You never know what positions that they might have open that you could fill. Often these employers will provide good fringe benefits even to lowly paid entry level workers and part time employees.

Local colleges and universities are another source of employment providing good benefits and pay better than many employers. For an easy resource to visit most college and university human resource pages go to

Also watch the local classified ads, while this isn't a particularly effective way to find a job due to competition, someone does get hired to fill these jobs. West Virginia has a variety of bulletin type publications selling a variety of merchandise that also contain employment listings. Employers also like to use these due to the low cost of advertisement.

So remember, keep the word out that you are looking for work, stay at it and don't get discouraged, and most of all ignore all that 'the sky is falling' crap on the news. There are jobs out there, even in West Virginia, and you will find one.

My brother just moved back to WV after being away for 20 years. He quit his job in Virginia and moved. Just like that. Two weeks later, he's working again (he's a manager with years of experience). I wouldn't have done it that way, but, then, I ain't my brother.
