2008 Fantasy Football Team by Team Analysis: Chicago Bears

The Bears play in a competitive NFC North, and ended up in last place last year with a record of 7-9. That's a pretty good record considering the quarterbacks this team insists on employing. While 7-9 may not satisfy many fans, management was content heading
into 2008 with a thinner roster than was present in 2007. Here's how the 2007 Chicago Bears compared to the rest of the league on offense and defense.

Offense (Ranking)

Points/Game 20.9 (18th)

Total Yards/Game 293.3 (27th)

Rush Yards/Game 83.1 (30th)

Pass Yards/Game 210.1 (15th)

Defense (Ranking)

Points/Game 21.8 (16th)

Total Yards/Game 354.7 (28th)

Rush Yards/Game 122.9 (24th)

Pass Yards/Game 231.8 (27th)

The Bear's offense and defense struggled at times last year, and did little to upgrade their roster for 2008. The quarterbacks have struggled in recent years, and instead of giving them help they lost their two starting wide receivers to free agency and lost their starting running back to "stupidness." Let's take a look at the options the Chicago Bears present for fantasy football teams this year:

Quarterback

Currently the Bears have only two quarterbacks on the team, and which one will be the starter is yet to be seen. To opposing teams, either quarterback will suffice. Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman haven't accomplished anything as starters, and this year will be worse as the wide receiving corps is thinner than last year. Stay far...far away from Chicago quarterbacks on draft day.

Running Back

The Bears dumped starting running back Cedric Benson after a rocky offseason. That leaves Adrian Peterson (currently) followed by rookie Matt Forte atop of the depth chart. On draft day, focus your attention on Forte, who should be able to come out of training camp as the starter. He ran for 2,127 yards at Tulane this year, and will be an upgrade over Benson (I would be an upgrade over Benson, but who's counting). Forte would be a great number 2 or 3 running back option on your team.

Wide Receiver

  • Stay away from Chicago's quarterbacks
  • Matt Forte is the running back to focus on...not Adrian Peterson
  • Devin Hester is a legitimate sleeper, and will get more touches in the passing game as well
