After many years of playing the Metal Gear series and waiting anxiously to see what happens next, it is time to say good bye to one of Video games greatest hero's of all time, "Solid Snake." Many people around the world will probably agree that there will never be another game comparable to Metal Gear. In the last and final chapter Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, we find ourselves playing Snake once more. Yet there is something different about him. After all the years of combat, the nanomachines placed in his body, and the fox-die, Snake is starting to age at an accelerated rate. In his weakened condition Snake must once again return to keep the world at peace from terrorist threats of taking over the world by any means necessary. Throughout this game you can see the tolls of Snakes condition, and how far it has progressed in such little time.

Being the Hero that he is, this does not stop Snake from doing what has to be done, stop Liquid and the Patriots at all costs. From beginning to end the player is led to believe that Snake must die, because he is becoming a ticking time-bomb. Waiting to release a new mutated strain of fox-die into the population, all thanks to the patriots Snake turns to the help of his faithful companion to stop Liquid in his tracks, Otacon. . While this is true, later in the game we find out that Snake only has a few months to a year to live.

At the end we see snake back at the graveyard that we see him in at the beginning of the game putting his pistol into his mouth and starting to squeeze the trigger. The screen goes black and we hear a gunshot...Is this, can this, no it can't be. Is this truly the way Snake is to die. After all of the battles he has been in and survived, and even after the torture that he was put through by Ocelot, is this truly the end? Luckily for us and Snake it is not the end yet for our hero.

Takeaways
  • Farewell to one of the best video game heroes of all time.
  • The series that set standards for all other series, Metal Gear.
  • At last the war is over and this old Snake can rest.

After the offscreen gunshot I knew he couldn't have killed himself. I love the way Kojima had the credits roll all the way up to Big Boss, pause just long enough for us to wonder, and then plunge straight into the real ending. The reunion with Big Boss at the end was very cathartic.
