Does someone owe you money? Are you sure? Missingmoney.com is a website dedicated to reuniting rightful owners with their missing money, which in most cases, the rightful owner was unaware of the missing money's existence. Missingmoney.com launched in 1999 as a way to unite states' missing money databases into one searchable database, which makes it much easier for mobile Americans to search for their name and bring up any possible matches in most states. At present time, however, not all states participate in the missingmoney.com database. Those states, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Indiana, New York, Oregon and Wyoming, can be contacted directly for inquiries.

How do states end up with your missing money?

Many times, it is simply a case of moving. Americans are mobile creatures and can freely move from state to state with ease. Missing money may involve uncashed checks due to address changes and mail not being forwarded, or it may also be utility deposits or small amounts left on deposit with banks or other financial institutions. Heirs, unaware of relatives' unclaimed property, may find that they are able to claim the missing money.

What is the best way to search for missing money?

The best and most thorough approach to searching on the missingmoney.com site is to do a broad search of the entire database if you have lived in several states. Don't just limit a search to the state in which you are residing, since you could miss out on missing money if a thorough enough search is not performed. When searching the missingmoney.com database, females should also search their maiden name, even if married for several years. In doing a general search of my maiden name, a recent search popped up unclaimed property belonging to my uncle, whom I know passed away close to 30 years ago.

While most people think of missing money as being cash, sometimes it is other property instead, such as contents of safety deposit boxes.

Takeaways
  • Missingmoney.com is a searchable database of almost all states' unclaimed property lists.
  • If a state does not participate, contact the state directly to inquire about unclaimed property.
  • Missingmoney.com lists the name of the company owing money, but not specific dollar figures.

Nice write up. I have to say if the money is from the state - it takes forever to hear back. I told my dad that I found his name in January, he made the request and didn't hear anything back until June and then he had to send copies of something (returns) that were from ages ago. Still hasn't heard anything, not even the amount owed to him. Hopefully it'll be more than $2.
