Many people dream of starting a business and many fail. There are some things to be aware of and consider prior to getting started. The following seven steps can tip the odds in your favor.

Develop a business plan.

This is an import but often overlooked step. When you go to get financing, most investors will want to see your business plan. Do not be afraid or reluctant to reassess and modify your business plan.

Location. Location. Location. Your business must be in a location that is accessible, clean and safe. How does your location fit into your marketing strategy?

What is the mission of your business? The mission-statement will keep you and your business on track. Set goals and milestones and reevaluate.

Training.

Do you have the appropriate training? Do you need any state licensures? You can obtain this information from most state's official website under the Department of Revenue. You do not need an MBA to be successful in running a business. Nevertheless, do not be afraid to take business classes if you need them. Sometimes you can get some great deals at your local community college. Just keep in mind that some of the most successful people in business do not have business degrees.

Join professional organizations and seek a business mentor. Research the small business administration's free information on their website, www.sba.gov. The SBA website provides a great service. It has a quick test you can take that will tell you the areas you are weak in for starting a buisiness. Then it will recommend free classes you can take to learn the skill needed to be successful. Face it; if you are successful at running a small business, everyone wins. Also, visit www.score.org for some great FREE information and referrals. I like free.

Really enjoyed the quick and dirty. I have some similar jump staters, but I did save your list of resources under my favorites in a folder with your name on it.

Excellent article! I have talked to several small business owners who didn't plan before they started and they lost their business. You made a good point about the name of the business also. When you have picked a name for your new baby business, it is hard to let go of it. Even if everyone around you tells you it's just wrong.
