How to Reduce Employee Turn-Over
Five Ways to Reduce Turn Over While Staying in Budget
We've seen it before. You have a great company, a great product, and your key staff is at the top of their game. You've got one big problem; your hourly employee turn over rate is so high it's painful to you and the company's bottom line.Whether you are in a call center environment or you are in the face to face sales business, you can reduce your company's turn over rate. It's all about understanding what will retain your best employees. It's probably best to first understand that different types of employees will respond to different incentives. So one incentive program is not enough!
Additionally, mind the age gap in your business culture and you are on your way to true employee retention. Too many times, Human Resource managers and team supervisors take lightly the difference in the generations in the workplace today. The following list is not only a sure way to motivate your workforce, but each item will fulfill the desire to be rewarded regardless of generation!
1. A simple thank you will suffice.
All of your employees want to know you think they are doing a great job. Especially if they really are doing a great job! One of the first steps is to say thanks for doing what they are supposed to do anyway. Rewarding notes (or even a card or email) will provide positive reinforcement and motivate employees to keep doing things the right way. If your employee is an 18 year old millennial worker (the youngest generation in the workforce) they will lap up the praise because they are constantly seeking your approval anyway. How many times has this employee come to you with a problem and an answer, just to hear you say "yes, you are correct."? They want your approval, always! Your mature employees will also appreciate the treat of a thank you. Although they aren't seeking your verbal approval as often because they were taught to do the job right, get paid, and be thankful for the honest paycheck, they are still thrilled that you noticed. (A small word of caution here; your mature employees are probably monetarily motivated for the most part. Be prepared for your "thank you" to be brought up at their next performance review!)
