Designing a small space can be a challenge. This is not only true for apartment or condo dwellers but even single family home dwellers that do not have a lot of spare rooms. At times, you would need to be very creative to create a functional space let alone a multipurpose one. A lot of homeowners view this as a welcome challenge, for they can use their creativity to make the space that can have multiple functions. One idea is to create a spare bedroom as a library/home office/guest room. Here are some suggestions on how one can go about designing this multipurpose room.

How to Create a Multipurpose Room

1) Decide which room to use as a multipurpose room. If you have only a couple of rooms such as in an apartment or condo, choose which one is your own private space or your bedroom and which one will be your multipurpose room. The bigger of the two would be an ideal option, however, even if you choose the secondary room which is typically the smaller of the two, you can still be creative. It is important that from the start you can make up your mind as to which room so as not to waste time in planning and preparation.

2) Draw a lay-out on a piece of paper. Even if you are not a professional designer or even if you are not good at drawing, you can make a simple sketch on a piece of white paper. if you want to give a more accurate measurement, use paper with grids that are used by designers. Mark out each grid as the number of square footage. Draw where your bed, desks, book cases, and chairs will be placed. it doesn't have to be perfect, you can do different drawings. For example, draw three styles, label them as drawing A, B or C. Choose the one with the best lay-out that can maximize your small space.

3) Measure your room. Even a small 10 feet by 10 feet room can be functional in many ways. Jotting down the correct measurement is important especially, if you are buying furnishings.

Takeaways
  • A small space can be decorated with more than one functionality with a well-designed plan.
  • Use built-ins whenever possible.
  • A wall bed system is a great option to add a sleeping area for your guests.
Did You Know?
Use floor screens to hide private spaces. If you want to use a daybed or twin bed instead of a wall bed or sleeper sofa, you may need to disguise or hide it when not in use. Use floor screens to use as room dividers as well as hide the sleeping area.

This is excellent. I have the one family dwelling. With one teen and one college son there is never enough room for all that is going on here. Thanks for the advice.

Great ideas! My office/guest bedroom just kind of evolved over time and it looks like it. I really need to do something about it.

Great tutorial for working with small spaces ~ as energy prices rise, I think we'll see more people moving into small space homes to save money.
