The other day the Democratic candidate for the United States Presidency, Barack Obama, made yet another blunder in my opinion. What's with this guy anyway? To me at least, it seems as though he is determined to see how many times he can shoot himself in the foot and survive. I saw the tape. He said, all American children should learn Spanish, don't worry about the Spanish speaking children, they will learn English. I find this a fascinating position.

According to the Census Bureau, there are 311 languages spoken in the U.S. among them 149 are immigrant languages and 162 are indigenous and many of them are on the verge of extinction. There are approximately 20 languages that are spoken by .9% or more of the population. 82 % of the population according to the 2000 census speaks English, approximately 11% speak Spanish. Many of the other languages are down in percentage only because the immigrants speaking these languages have made a point to learn English and to make sure their children and grandchildren did the same. The Spanish speaking immigrants are merely newer. However, the remaining non-English speaking population still numbers in the millions.

If this was a case of simply English speaking children being required to learn Spanish and vice versa (although Senator Obama doesn't think we need to require Spanish speaking children to learn English), then what he is saying would make sense. However, The millions of children who speak French, Italian, German, Cantonese, Polish, Mandarin, Arabic, Greek or any of the other languages in the top twenty would now be required to learn a third language. This is a very nice concept in theory. But wouldn't it be easier to simply teach all of the children a unifying language? English? I'm not sure Senator Obama has thought out the logistics or the budget for this Spanish requirement he suggests.

I agree with Baconator. Although people in many other countries are required to learn English, if I moved somewhere I would certainly want to assimilate better by learning the native language.

I totally understand the whole melting pot.. all fine and dandy and embrace difference.. but come on.. if I was to move to Mexico.. do you think everyone is going to go out of their way to learn English for me? When in Rome do as Romans?

I think that Obama suggesting English speaking children learn Spanish is a good idea. Spanish speaking children do learn English, and always faster than their parents because they need English to survive in this country. Requiring children to learn a language is a great idea becuase that is when it is easiest for them to learn. Spanish is a good idea because it is spoken in our country and areas close to us. Also, learning Spanish as a child will give many benefits such as a better grasp on grammar and a basis to learn other languages, especially romance languages. Being bilingual can never be a bad thing, I don't know why people put it down like its a negative thing.

Another great piece, though not sure if Obama actually stated Spanish children in the U.S. should not learn English.I will have to youtube the video and hear the whole thing to see if I infer something different from his speech. Agree or disagree, I love how we dish on anything from ice cream to politicis : )

I live in a multi-lingual neighborhood, most kids are bilingual, I don't think there needs to be an official language, I think he and you underestimate the intelligence of children.

You did such a good job on this topic. He promised change he didn't say what was going to change. All I can say is if he is going to change the official language we speak, as slow as I am he'll be out of office by the time I get it right! I been taught English good just now.... Someone sign me up for a refresher course!

Jeez, my trigger finger is too fast this morning. I also meant to say that I agree that since English is the U.S. language (although not officially), those who want to live and work here should learn it. When we lived overseas, I certainly understood the German's expectation that we should speak their language.
