Over the past weekend, I picked up my local Sunday paper and started to quickly look for articles of interest. In the middle, I cam across a section called "Riseup." It was a magazine insert for the paper. The magazine was about understanding our differences, bridging our divisions, and celebrating our commonalities as a country. The magazine stresses the celebration of diversity among all Americans.Articles in their magazine this past week, had articles on aging, the exploitation of pop cultures like "goth", oriental cultures, an article on Santa Fe, and the use of "flathead's" in our diet. A flathead is like a tortilla.
Each of these articles have to do with some part of our American cross culture. The magazine is set up to cover areas of common ties, enterprise, travel, stereotypes, family, exercise, and food. Small and major articles are found in each.
Riseup is currently appearing in major newspapers in Kansas City, St, Louis, Chicago, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Los Angeles,New York, and the Washington Post. They have over 4 million inserts in circulation. Their first (inaugural) issue was on June 22 of this year in the Kansas City Star. Kansas City is where the magazine is published and shipped out to other locations.
Dr. Janice Ellis is the founder, editor, and publisher of the magazine. Ellis was once a mayoral candidate for Kansas City, Missouri. She has a doctorate degree in communications and a Masters degree in political science from the University of Wisconsin. The writers, for the magazine, come from all across the United States.
The magazine's main goal is to provide a better understanding of all races, ages, religion, and ethnicities. To help better understand the challenges and problems that each experiences in our country. The magazine is sounding board and educational resources for all Americans looking to explore and learn about the diversified cultures of our nation.
Riseup also has three social media outlets. Those being Twitter, Facebook, and You tube.
