Want to become a book reviewer?

Attention, rabid readers! If you are a bibliophile, a bookworm or a lover of the printed word, why not share your interest with others and perhaps earn cash at the same time? By reviewing what you read, you might profit your bank account as well as your brain.

Skilled book reviewers are warmly welcomed by countless publications and websites, including booksellers, publishing industry magazines, online literary communities, local newspapers, libraries and citizen journalism websites.

Many publishers regularly offer free books to readers who can provide informative book reviews. In addition, book purchases may be tax-deductible for book reviewers.

Here's a handy guide to writing a book review, from start to finish.

Choose the book you wish to review.

First, as a book reviewer, you may opt to specialize in a certain type of book or in a field that interests you. For example, you may adore autobiographies, be a fiction fanatic or simply love self-help books. If you are an avid gardener, a creative cook or a history buff, you might choose to review books in that area.

A specialized book reviewer can carve out a readership niche quite simply.

Read with your book review in mind.

Once you have selected a book to review, you will want to read the book (cover to cover) at least twice. Enjoy the first reading, as you absorb an overall impression of the book. Underline key points, and make margin notations, so you will focus on those sections again.

Consider, as you read, the author's purpose in writing the book. What tone is used? From what ideological viewpoint is the author writing?

As you reread the book, look for specific ideas, insights and points you may wish to mention, as you review the book.

Once you finish your second (or even third) reading, you will be ready to begin writing your book review.

Structure your book review appropriately.

Generally, a book review will list all key bibliographical details at the very beginning. Usually, this information will appear in an indented section above the review content.

This is great, Linda - It holds true for movies, TV shows and plays, too. I've read too many reviews lately that just tell you what happened, step by step. that's not a review. Something constructive must be said to help (or discourage, if that's the reviewer's goal) the viewer or reader.

Good framework, LA. What I want to know, though, is while I'm reading and reviewing, who's doing my writing? (smile) Write on, Michael
