Underestimating the Severity of Paxil Withdrawal: Important Information About SSRI's

I’ve been taking Paxil for two years.  As an anti-depressant, it’s effective.  As a drug, it’s too effective.  When I was prescribed this medication, I didn’t know much about selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI’s).  I
didn’t research them as much as I should have.  My doctor informed me of the side effects that plague most users.  There was no way of sidestepping these symptoms, so I decided to simply live with them.  After a year on Paxil, I decided that the side effects were too vexing to live with.  After consulting with a different doctor, I decided to start taking a different SSRI while weaning myself off of Paxil.  After discontinuing Paxil, I wished that I had never taken anti-depressants to begin with.

Drug companies are upfront about common side effects, but when it comes to withdrawal symptoms, there is scant information available.  I wanted to switch to a different pill because Paxil was crushing my libido (which is the most common side effect).  Having been through Paxil withdrawal, a sedated libido doesn’t seem so bad.  In order to wean myself off of Paxil, I had to lower my dosage for a week before dropping it entirely.  Apparently, this lessens the severity of withdrawal.  On the first Paxil-free day, I felt fine.  On the second Paxil-free day (of Christmas), I felt lightheaded.  On the third Paxil-free day, I was very lightheaded and hypersensitive to sound and motion.

Related information
  • Paxil withdrawal shares many symptoms with heroine withdrawal.
  • Suicidal thoughts are frequently reported amongst those withdrawing from Paxil.
  • SSRI's are a class of anti-depressants used to treat depression and anxiety disorders.

Thanks for enlightening the public about the severity of withdrawals. I am currently going through withdrawal 2 weeks after I took my last pill. I had been on Paxil for almost 12 years!!!! How long will this last?????

i have been on 20-40 mg for at least five years and i have now stopped cold turkey for 11 days with no side affects other than i have more energy, i get up earlier in the morning, i am not tired at 10pm, i am excercising harder and more intense than when i was 30 (i'm 48). i'm not sure why i stopped taking it other than i travel alot and forgot to take it with me for about five days. after that, i just quit taking it. i will say one thing--pray!! i believe God has answered my prayers. it can be done--i'll check back in a few more days to see if i'm still not suffering any side affects.

my doctor lowered my dose of paxil from 25mg to 12.5mg...I'm sooo confused...she lowered my dose cause I was in a zombie like state...mind you a very happy zombie :)my sex drive was gone, which completely sucked!! anyhow the side effects from lowering my dose are driving me crazy!! I am very dizzy at times, and any noise irritates the life outta me! I'm extremely agitated and I've been crying about things that would'nt have bothered me before...I hope it diminishes soon...I think I'd rather be a happy zombie than go throught this..LOL

Much needed information for the general public. As a former pharmacy technician I was aware of this scenario but your first person account drives the information home. Thanks for a great article - I hope it gets to the right people.

Many times the side effects outweigh the actual cure. On the other hand such as with my mother and her depression, the medication she is on actually is doing more than just herself some good. The reason I mention my mother is due to the fact my dad died 3 years ago this month, she has deteriating eyesight, diabetes, and high blood pressure. The combination of the first two things leads her to become depressed which in turn affects the other two conditions she has. Then when she is having (before she admitted to the doctor that she gets depressed) would lead to stress for my brother and I. I think anti-depressants should be used and how they are prescribed should be better looked into by the physicians before being prescribed on individual basis. I am not sure that this will help any of you personally, but I hope it does to some extent.

I HAVE HEARD THE CURE IS WORSE THEN THE cause when it comes to these type of drugs. If you go off of these drugs, you hit bottom quickly.
