Looking for a bold new look on your holiday tree this year? Consider this plaid snowflake ornament project. Any color plaid print scrapbook paper and paint can be substituted, with the same general look staying intact. For this project, you will need:
- Three inch or larger glass ball ornament
- Snowflake shaped stencil
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Daisy D's "Traditional Plaid Classic Green" Print Scrapbook Paper (found in stores or online here at Paper Addict)
- Dark red acrylic paint
- Paper cup
- Mod Podge or other decoupage medium
- Paper towel
- Sponge brush
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Acrylic finishing spray
- Green ribbon
- Newspaper or a drop cloth
For easier cleanup once this project is completed, cover your work area with newspaper or a drop cloth prior to starting. Carefully remove the hanging cap from a three inch or larger glass ball ornament. Set aside. Pour a bit of dark red acrylic paint inside the ornament and "swirl" around until the inside of the glass ball has been completely coated. Place the ornament upside down in a paper cup to drain any excess paint and dry overnight.
Place the Daisy D's "Traditional Plaid Classic Green" Print Scrapbook Paper flat on your work area. With a pencil, trace the image of the snowflake stencil directly onto the paper. Cut out the shape with scissors. Repeat this process with a few other snowflake prints, varying the size of the cutouts as you wish.
Use the sponge brush to apply a bit of Mod Podge or other decoupage medium to the painted glass ball ornament. Adhere the snowflake paper cutout to the glass ball ornament, smoothing away any bubbles in the paper. Wipe away any excess adhesive with a slightly damp paper towel. Re-dry the ornament upside down, overnight in the paper cup.
Cover the entire ornament with several coats of acrylic finishing spray. Re-install the hanging cap and secure it with a bit of hot glue. Cut a length of green ribbon and thread it through the hanging cap before using on your tree.
