How to Stay Positive in Such a Negative World
Embed:
Positivity is a choice of perspective, not a random result of uncontrollable events. Happy people cultivate personality traits that enable them to see a world filled with opportunity, in spite of a constant barrage of negative influences. Optimists refuse to believe that cynicism is synonymous with savvy, or that idealism equals a simplistic or naive world view. You can foster traits of positivity within yourself through specific actions. Humility
In this self-centered age, it is rare to hear anybody consistently attribute his or her success to another person or a higher power. We are encouraged to glory in self-reliance. Humility allows for the sharing of good fortune, and with the sharing, appreciation increases. Happy people can rattle off a list of their blessings, the way most people rattle off a list of worries.
1. Thank somebody.
Take time to reflect on the way that person improves your life. Don't wait until you lose someone, to appreciate what they meant to you. Thank strangers too (a veteran, a local hero). You have no way of knowing what your small act of gratitude may inspire from others, and/or what damage it may undo.
2. Count your blessings.
Write a list of things for which you are grateful, and add at least one daily. Include things you take for granted such as food for your children, good health, and birdsong.
Tolerance
Humans are a cliquish species. We fear what we don't understand. We ask, "Why can't they be like us," when confronted with a person who is different in appearance, attitude, lifestyle, or circumstance. Optimists rejoice in the opportunity to learn from others, even as they search out commonalities they share with the "different" person.
3. Learn!
If you have an attitude concerning a people that are unfamiliar to you, start by researching the supposed difference. Apply that education by talking with, and more importantly listening to, everybody, not just the people with whom you have the most in common.
4. Be tolerated.
