Motorcycles are known to be very dangerous, regardless of who is driving them. If your teenage son or daughter has recently been begging you about getting a motorcycle, you may not think that this is the best idea. Here are some of the different factors that you should take into consideration before allowing, or not allowing, your teen to have a motorcycle.

Is Your Teen Responsible Enough For a Motorcycle?

The first and foremost thing that you should consider before allowing your teen to drive a motorcycle is whether he or she is responsible enough. Not only does your child need to be mature enough to understand the importance of wearing a helmet, but he or she also needs to know that it is necessary to drive carefully when riding a motorcycle. If you do not think that your teen is responsible enough to be able to handle doing either of these things, then it is probably best to avoid allowing your child to drive a motorcycle.

Why Does Your Teenage Child Want a Motorcycle?

Another one of the things that you will want to consider is why your teenage child wants to own a motorcycle. Is it because motorcycles are known to be very gas efficient? If so, this may be a good reason to want to own a bike due to the high and always rising price of gas. Having a passion for motorcycles is another great reason for a teen to want one. A bad reason for your teenage son or daughter to want to own a motorcycle would be if all of their friends own want and they just want to be "cool." It is a good idea to ask your teen why they want to own a motorcycle before making your decision.

Who is Going to Pay For Your Teen's Motorcycle?

This is a question that you would need to ask yourself if your teen wanted a car instead of a bike. Who is going to pay for the motorcycle? A motorcycle is not going to be handed to your teenage son or daughter for free. Are you willing to pay for it? Will your teen get a part-time job or save up enough allowance to pay for it? Who is going to cover the ongoing cost of gas and motorcycle insurance? The cost of owning a motorcycle is one of the most important things that you should think about before deciding to allow your teen to have one.

Great arguements here.

Having just lost a 34-yr-old cousin to a motorcycle/deer collision...I'm not much in favor of them, especially for our youngsters who see themselves as invincible in the first place. My cousin was a long-time biker who was heading home after work. The deer appeared "out of nowhere." Neither speed nor inattentive driving was not a factor.

I had a motorcyle when I was a teenager, but as I reflect back on it, I was noit as responsible as I should have been. Great topic and article!

I think teens should not be given motorcycles. Teens and motorcycles cannot be a good combination.

I think that if I had children, I'd be hesitant to let them buy a motorbike, even if they paid for it themselves. There is already so much danger on the roads from mindless drivers. Teenagers could get into serious accidents, not necessarily through any fault of their own, or worse. Sophie

Nope! If I had a teenager he/she wouldn't get a motorcycle until he could buy it on his own ... you have to be 18 to enter into a contract... I feel that even then it could be dangerous. My friend's husband was killed on a motorcycle. She is remarried and said if her present husband insisted on getting a motorcycle she would divorce him. As a nurse I have picked lots of gravel out of the skin of adults and teens. Those leather jacket and chaps don't help all that much when you get road rash. Great article!

Motorcycles are too dangerous no matter how good of a driver the rider is! There are too many idiots on the roadways nowadays so I say no motorcycles! Yes they get great gas mileage but they are too hard to see coming down the road..Great topic Jody as always!!!
