Although winter in the Midwest can be dreary, Chicago knows how to take it in stride and still celebrate the holidays in its own unique way. Rich in ethnic neighborhoods, museums, theaters, shopping, and dining, Chicago is a wonderful place to visit any time of year. However, most visitors discount its appeal when the snow starts to fly, but Chicagoans know that winter can be a magical time of the year. Don't miss out on some truly unique Chicago events.

Wreathing the Lions at the Art Institute of Chicago
The Art Institute is a great place to visit anytime of year, but Chicagoans consider Wreathing the Lions their own special holiday ceremony. Two bronze lions stand guard at the museum's entrance, and this November 24, along with caroling and hot chocolate, there will be the traditional wreathing ceremony. When it gets too cold outside with the crowds, pop into the museum for a look around at one of the world's finest collections of art dating from 3000 BC to the present. Free family guides make viewing fun for the younger set, too.

Magnificent Mile Lights Festival
Each year, holiday shoppers enjoy the lights along Michigan Avenue, the heart of shopping and dining in Chicago. Buildings are lit beginning November 18 and carry through into the New Year. Buildings such as the Chicago Tribune Tower come with full effect lighting once the sun goes down each evening, and fireworks are set off along the Chicago River twice weekly. Excellent fireworks viewing can be done from the top of the  John Hancock Building in the Visitor's Viewing Center, safe from the winter wind.

Christkindlmarket
Daley Plaza is the setting for this outdoor German market that is held from November 23 through December 24. The Christkindlmarket is an open air market, modeled after the outdoor markets of Germany. Strolling around on a wintery afternoon finds shoppers buying Christmas decorations, handmade crafts, and of course, German food and drink.

I've heard great things about the German Christmas market.
