Retired Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre will be petitioning the league for his reinstatement, a move that will force the Green Bay Packers to either add him to their roster or release him; a story on packersnews.com is reporting.

The story, which cites a source close to Favre, doesn't say when Favre will make his formal request to Commissioner Roger Goodell but it is assuming the move will take place prior to the Packers training camp.

The Packers have already said they have no intention of releasing Favre outright; out of fears he would sign with a division rival. However, in earlier statements, they indicated they still intend to move on with former first round pick Aaron Rodgers as their starter and, if kept on the roster, Favre may not be re-claiming that starting job.

The team also hasn't ruled out a trade for the all-time leading passer. But, they have also said no other teams have inquired about him. Several potential suitors, including the Minnesota Vikings and New York Jets have downplayed any rumored interest in the 38-year-old.

During an interview broadcast on Tuesday, Favre said he had no intention of being a back up quarterback. When asked if he was willing to compete with Rodgers for the starting job, he answered "why?"

It's unclear at this point whether Favre would report to the Packers' July 27 training camp. He hinted at doing that during his interview but later backed off of comments about calling the Packers "bluff."

If Favre is re-instated and fails to report to camp, the team can fine him roughly $15,000 for each day he holds out; though it is unknown whether the Packers would take that step.
