Jack Russell terriers are filled with energy and will be eager to grab dominance over you if you don't start training them right away. You have to remember that these terriers will boldly go after a fox not only above ground but will burrow through their underground dens to reach their prey. So, they are very strong minded and do not give ground easily. Their natural instinct is to chase, stalk, and catch their prey. You will need to work with these qualities and not let them get the upper hand. Although of good temperament, they do like to be the boss if they can get away with it.

If you let a Jack Russell pup get away with ruling the roost, you will soon be seeing their aggressiveness towards any other defenseless pets you have such as cats, gerbils, hamsters, etc. As this terrier loves to bark and dig frantically, your household, and particularly your furniture, could be in topsy turvy conditions quite soon. You need to make sure your pup gets plenty of outdoor time to dissipate some of this frenetic energy.

If your Jack Russell terrier is well trained he will make a great family pet, even with his hyperactivity and hunting instincts. These pups can be gentle and good hearted and endlessly entertaining. They can be raised in the city or in the country, but they would really thrive in the country where they could chase rats and mice and woodchucks. This would also give them plenty of land to dig in, instead of your flowerbeds.

If you don't start training your terrier right away, it can be hard to break any bad behavior or bad habits. They will respond well to voice command training. If your pup starts growling and snapping, you need to use your voice commands forcefully. You should always address any signs of aggression immediately.

A Jack Russell terrier loves to be fussed over and praised and is very loyal. Once the training has been completed you will have a pup that can be lots of fun for the whole family. But if your training fails, you will have your hands full with your little energized, hyperactive terrier.
