I take a lot of screen shots for my articles, as most people do. Many of my software reviews get multiple screen shots (often I max out my five allotted images), while most get a couple, while all get at least one. Unfortunately, both in Mac OSX and Linux, screen shots are saved, by default, in the open source PNG format. PNG (Portable Network Graphic), is a great format, but Associated Content won't accept uploads in it, so I need to find a way to convert. This usually isn't a problem, since often I want to crop my screen shots, but sometimes all I want to do is save them as JPG.

Which is why I was happy to see a free program by the name of Shrink-O-Matic. Shrink-O-Matic is a free application, running on the Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR for short), available for Mac or Windows (and someday Linux, when AIR is fully ported), that not only allows the saving of images in different formats, but also - as the name would imply - resize them in the process.

What all does Shrink-O-Matic do? First, it shrinks your pictures. Shrink-O-Matic gives you a couple options in this regard. You can choose to resize your images to a precise number of pixels (for example, exactly 400 pixels by 600 pixels), or you can limit a particular dimension (width or height), so that all your images will be identical in one or the other. This is nice for creating a lineup of images, where you might want all your pictures to be the same height or the same width. You can also tweak the output dimensions by assigning a particular ratio. In this way, you aren't so concerned with getting an exact set of dimensions, since you're telling Shrink-O-Matic to simply make all the images it processes a certain percentage of their original size.
