young girls. This has created outrage and debate. Interestingly, the Barbie Black Canary doll is a collector's doll, primarily marketed to those 14 and older, also described as adults in the listing. Huh? When did age 14 become adult?

In researching this further, I discovered that many of these dolls are not only easily available from Barbie girl websites but also sold online and in stores such as Toys R Us and Walmart.

If you want to know more about the Black Swan Barbie Canary Doll, one based on a DC comics character, you can check out my article here.

You can see a photo of her by clicking on related links as well as her rather skimpy clothing, from the leather look jacket to the fishnet stockings. Also worth noting: this doll is intended for those over 14. In short, she is a Barbie collectors doll. Ostensibly, she was never meant for young girls to play with. So why is she being sold at ToysRus and other sites? Why is she already showing up on links from Barbie girl websites?

The Black Swan Canary doll is one of many collector dolls that are just as sexy and which can be easily found at Barbie girl websites without parental help.

The Barbie Black Canary doll was made for a specific set of doll collectors. Other dolls made under various labels, from pink label Barbie collectors' dolls to silver and black label Canary dolls, include a wide variety of figures. A Batgirl figure has a tight, clinging black suit, cape, gloves, knee high boots and bat ears. Then there is Little Red Riding Hood, also barely dressed, with a leering wolf nearby.

"and parents and others may face some questions from their children as they stroll down the toy aisles this holiday season and all year long, if this continues to be a trend. " Mommy, why is it that collector Barbie wearing a black leotard, leather jacket, and fishnets risque but this normal barbie in the regular pink box wearing a skimpy bathing suit and nothing else more age appropriate? Also, what are mixed signals?

I saw this doll on TV and was surprised at how she was dressed. Your article offers some good insights.

A lot of dolls brought to young girls these days are just ridiculous. Barbie used to be wholesome, she now looks like a hooker. Bratz.... these are dolls that look like Vegas street corner girls.... its really ridiculous, they have to draw a line somewhere... great article.

I agree 100% with the red riding hood version. Ridiculous. It looks like a joke, with the wolf drooling at her. On the other hand, Black Canary and Batgirl look exactly how they are in the comic books, so why change them? Besides, I can hardly believe there is a 14 year old girl interested in Batgirl or Black Canary. If they are fans of Smallville, they are probably looking for pictures of Tom Welling. My wife has a ton of Barbies of the World (60 or more) and I collect the Justice League action figures based on Alex Ross designs. Neither me or my wife are interested in these superhero Barbies. But why are people upset because a 14 year old girl can sneak and buy a Black Canary is beyond my mind. If you don't pay attention to your kids is not Mattel's fault. Educate your kids, be with them.. . It seems to me like Barbie is trying to be back to its roots when it was indeed a sexy toy for adults. We still love the Elvis, Lucy, Grease, Flinstones and other Barbies

Good grief, and I thought the Bratz junk with their inflated lips was bad! Great article!

The Pussycat Dolls singing group (if you can call them that) also has a line of dolls out. They look like strippers.

yikes. it's crazy that they even make them like that for the adults.

Ugh. And to think we are trying to adopt a little girl! There are so many things out there to worry about when you have a little girl. Toys shouldn't have to be one of them.

Good points here. There is definitely a difference between children's toys and adult collectors' items and these things should not be sold together in the same place. While I have seen worse than the Barbie Black Canary doll, I personally would not buy this for a young child.

I like Barbie dolls and always have. And I've always thought that all Barbie dolls are very skimpily dressed and rather sexy so I don't really see the problem with the new Barbie. She's no different than any of the others really, she's super pretty and she's for collectors so, parents, stay away and just don't buy that one if it offends you. Great article, thanks.
