Always, always refer to an officer as "officer" or "sir". This will show them that you are being serious and respectful. The more respectful you act towards the police, the more easy they may be towards you. While being respectful is always alright you want to make sure that your tone of voice is also proper.

Being a goof off when you are speaking with a police officer can lead them to question what is really going on and may cause you some very serious trouble. I have been pulled over by the police before and unlike Elizabeth Ann Kommes I acted respectfully and called the officer by the name "officer" and he let me off with a warning.
