Visiting Adams Lake State Park in West Union, Ohio

Fishing, Hiking and More at Adams Lake State Park

Adams Lake State Park is located about a mile north of West Union, Ohio, in the southern part of the state. Adams Lake State Park consists of just under a hundred acres of woods and water for public use. The park takes its name from the lake around which the park is situated. Adams Lake
is rarely very clear making it unsuitable for swimming (which is not permitted). However the normally murky waters are abundant with fish and provide a variety of challenges for fisherman. Largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie and catfish are the usual targets of sport fishermen (and women!) in the area. The park provides a boat ramp to access the waters, but motors are restricted to electric only. The area around the park is flat and the lake shores fairly open allowing good bank fishing opportunities and room to spread out away from others.

There are two short hiking trails in Adams Lake State Park. The trails run through the unique foliage of the adjacent nature preserve. Much of the preserve is prairie. The habitat in the park is more similar to the plains states that to the rest of Ohio. There is an opportunity here to see unique foliage not seen in most of the Buckeye State. Due to this unique habitat, the State of Ohio offers a variety of nature programs in the park throughout the year. Due to the uniqueness of this natural area please stay on the trails and encourage children to do so as well. While there is nothing better for a child than to play in an outdoor setting, this is perhaps not the place. There is however plenty of room around the lake for children to play.

Adams Lake State Park offers nice areas for families and other groups to picnic including a large shelter for bigger groups. Many of the picnic areas are well shaded and offer privacy and a nice view of the lake or woods. There is a playground for the children in the group as well.
