Summer Excursion to Saugatuck, Michigan

A summer excursion to Saugatuck, Michigan can add a whole new aspect to summer visit to the greater Chicago area. Located along the coast of Lake Michigan, Saugatuck is a great contrast to the city of Chicago. There are no
millions of inhabitants clogging the streets. In fact the year round population of this little community is only about a thousand people. Summer residents often triple that number but Saugatuck, Michigan has been able to maintain its status and look as a village community. The presence of the Kalamazoo River in the town, the nearness of Lake Michigan and the continuing flourishing of art and architecture draw people by the droves to spend a day or two or even more to soak up the charm that is offered by Saugatuck Michigan.

If visiting in the Chicago area provides you with a chance to head up to sample life in Saugatuck, don't be ashamed to jump at the chance. The two hours or so that are required to get there from Chicago will melt away once you step out of your car and begin to absorb the vacationing mood of the town. A good way to begin your stay is to stop at one of the riverside eateries and treat yourself to your favorite coffee and some tempting pastry both of which become even more enjoyable when consumed next to a river view. At 220 Water Street along the docks of Saugatuck you will find Coral Gables complex which includes all kinds of eating options. We loved its late morning coffee and banana nut bread treat, but honestly sitting on the wrap around porch of the Gables "Annex" looking out at the sparkling water of the Kalamazoo River would sweeten any repast.

Leaving the coffee shop you can set out in lots of different treks depending on your interests. We chose to stroll along the nearby boardwalk which seems to go on forever and can make you feel truly like you are a million miles away from every care and concern. Not only can you enjoy gazing at the array of spectacular yachts tied up along the boardwalk but you can deviate a mite from your walk and check out the work of riverside artisans who offer both their wares and a window into their very unique world.

The view from the deck at Coral Gables is amazing. I love that they have 3 different decks with great views of the river. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They went above and beyond any other server I have ever had. I had a great bone in Kansas City strip that was cooked perfectly. My husband had the perch. It was the best perch that I have ever tasted. For those over 21, the golden margarita was nice and strong with great flavor. It was not too sour like many you get at restaurants. My kids were happy with their meals. My son loved the ravioli. It was huge! Both of my daughters loved the mini hot dog. There was live music on the next deck that had a Jimmy Buffet feel. It was packed over there with people drinking and dancing. Another thing that I loved was all of the attractions for kids. There were a bunch of quarter rides, a 25 foot tall rock wall, a bungee trampoline and a bounce house. This is a great place. I would recommend it any day!
