Free Activities to Keep Your Kids Entertained

Free and Fun Things to Do for Kids During Summer

The summer holidays can be a challenging time for parents who can't afford to spend a lot of money on activites for their kids. Even if you are not planning a holiday abroad, cinema tickets, entrance fees to swimming pools and activity centres
can really quickly add up and if you are not careful, a summer holiday spent at home can cost almost as much as a family stay in a luxury hotel but there are some fun things you can do with the kids during summer that are free. If you don't want your kids to spend their summer holidays in front of the TV, consider these free activities for kids that the whole family can enjoy.

If you live near the sea, one of the ultimate free activities for kids is a day at the beach. Kids love splashing in the water and if you are a swimmer yourself, you can even give them free swimming lessons. Make sure that young children are being supervised at all times and that there is a lifeguard on duty; also, don't forget the sun lotion. There are fun things to do at the beach even if the weather is not very hot; bring a volley ball or any other game that can be played outside and withstand a sea breeze or have fun building sandcastles.

Instead of bringing the kids out to eat at a fast food restaurant, go for a picnic; salads and sandwiches are a great alternative to greasy foods and not only the kids will love the novelty or eating outside but they can also lend a helping hand to food preparation. If you live in a nice country area, combine your picnic with a walking or cycling trip or even a fishing trip. Think of bringing games that you can play outside with the children, like a game of tennis or even a pack of cards and dispose of waste in a bin or take it home with you and bin it there.

Finding "free" activities can be extremely hard to find if you live even a short way from the local town, as we do. Just taking my daughter to a "free" event costs at least $12.00 in gasoline. A trip to the beach this year which is only an hour away will cost close to $60 in gas alone. A day trip to the beach will be our family vacation this year. It is a sad statement on our economy I know.

Great ideas! I have found that my kids enjoy the simple, inexpensive activities that we do during the summer as much as the bigger, more costly outings - it all comes down to the joy and creativity that you bring with you!

it's hard to find things to do, one other thing we did this summer was join a "playgroup" we get group discounts on tickets, have met new freinds and we take turns "hosting" playtimes so we get to try something new without breaking the bank. but we are lucky here in houston as there are so many free things offered around the city. good ideas you have here!
