There are many benefits to having an indoor office plant, and there also a lot of plants out there to choose from. So how do you go about choosing a plant for your workspace? It's important to choose plants that can thrive in your specific office environment. Here are a few things to keep in mind when you're making this choice.

First, are you sure your office allows plants? It may seem like an odd thing, but the company may have a policy regarding interior office plants. Most companies would be fine and even happy to have plants incorporated in the office, but some can be quite strict about disallowing office plants due to fire codes and other policies.

If there are no policies halting your search, now you can ask yourself how much space you are willing to designate for your plant. Do you want to place the plant on the floor or on a surface like a desk or counter? How much vertical space is there for you to work with? It is going to be important that you know these things when choosing a plant. If you plan on getting a plant for your desk, a larger plant that grows to your ceiling isn't going to work obviously. You have to think long term when choosing an office plant.

Next, ask yourself how much care you can devote to a plant? Some plants need more attention and maintenance than others. If you know you won't be able to find the time to water or prune your office plant every workday, choose a plant that doesn't need daily care. Factor in dust as well when thinking about maintenance. Indoor plants collect dust just like any other office surface. You want to go with a plant that isn't going to show that dust easily or one with leaves that are easy to clean. There are many low maintenance plants out there to choose from. Ideally, an office plant needs infrequent watering and fertilization and can last for a very long time in virtually any environment.
