Jon and Kate Plus Eight: A Sham?

A 7/28/08 National Enquirer Article is Highly Critical of This Popular Family

Each Monday night, I have a standing date with my TV. That's when I watch Jon and Kate Plus Eight - the wildly popular TLC show featuring Jon and Kate Gosselin, their 7-year-old twins, and 4-year-old sextuplets. I enjoy the interaction between Jon and Kate, but most of all the cute antics of their kids.

So, I was dismayed to read a current National Enquirer article "exposing" the family as a "sham". Now I know, I know - it's the NATIONAL ENQUIRER. I'm skeptical too. However, it often seems to me that articles I read in the tabloids do have a kernel of truth to them. What's alleged?

1. Although the Gosselins portray themselves on TV as struggling financially, they're really not. They get many donations from various sources (this is not news to anyone who watches the show; almost every week the Gosselins are seen benefitting from one donation or another). The article also claims the Gosselins have a personal organic chef, nannies, housekeepers, a gardener, and a personal assistant to run errands. Hmmm ... well, again from the show we've seen that volunteers come and help with laundry, so I'm not sure if that counts as a housekeeper or not. I would assume that when TLC is filming, there would be "assistants" who would help in various ways. I'm not sure if that is what is referred to or not.

2. The Gosselins have a wealthy family member who supports them. I have no idea who this might be. If you watch the show, you know that Jon and Kate's parents are not involved in the Gosselins' daily lives.

yes indeedy now these folks have "saved" so much money they've bought a home worth over a million dollars-- either they had a wealthy family member they hadn't alientated, Jon has a job as a bank robber or they've been fleecing the public enough that they now think they're superstar enough to live down the road from Hugh Heffner.

My comment got cut off. The end said: What do you wnat her to say "Now Maddie, there are some people who watch the show and don't like the way you act. So while the cameras are around, you need to talk and act nicer so our ratings go up" LMAO! I agree that Maddie isn't the most well behaved child. But Jon and Kate need to work with her on it because they think her behavior needs to change, not because viewers don't like it!!

If you don't like the show, then change the channel!!! Not rocket science people!! I guess those of you who criticize the way Jon and Kate do things also have twins and sextuplets, and have raised them to be perfect angels, and haven't had to raise your voice one time. WOW, if that's the case you should write a book and tell the rest of us how you do it. As for all the help they receive, OF COURSE THEY HAVE HELP!! I've never heard them deny it. Infact I've heard them say that they know how blessed they are, and wouldn't be where they are without people helping them. If you're going to criticize them, at least get your facts straight. My final comment is in response to a statement by funnyfloor. This peoson said: "It should concern Kate that a large part of the audience has negative reactions to Maddie because of her brattiness" Why should it concern her that a bunch of complete strangers don't like the way Maddie acts??? Yes it's a Sham

No if, ands or buts about it, total SHAM. A shameful sham even! Why there is even one person buying the swill Figure 8 is trying to sell us is beyond my comprehension. A reality story about a family who live in the same area as their parents, siblings and friends but they are all vanished into the ether. So the only common thread in the story is Kate. Look into abused spouses and children. Read carefully about the need to isolate the victims. Kate will have a lovely estate built to her taste to be able to continue the emotional and psychological torture of the children without any "loved ones" being there to protect them. It breaks my heart and I won't be surprised what happens in a few years when they are teens. That Figure 8, TLC and all the rest are sticking their heads in the sand to earn a dollar today won't help them in a few short years when they are called upon to answer for the damages. Sad.

I havew never been so compelled to write to sponsers of any show, but Jon and Kate plus 8 have gotten under my skin. I loved tjhis show until 2 months ago when I realized that Aunt jodi was no longer a part of this train wreck. And after reviewing re-runs realized that Kate is a total self righteous , better than all of my family ,no good mean spirited person. Kate is the most rude obnoxious person on tv. Shut her up Cancel the show Show a good family with solid morals such as the Duggars. Those children are happy content and loved by both of their parent's... Kate, stand up straight. Your slumping walk is so damn annoying And quit yelling HELLO !!!STOP and watch yiour behavior... You are a MESS> But surprisingly you continue to put everyone around down. I do not even feel sorry for Jon anymore. He is for some strange reason backing up Kate's behavior from time to time.. It makes me think he is so afraid of Kate that he feels he must defend her So sad.. Listen to Mady

IMO - once you let those camera's role you have opened yourself to positive and yes, negavtive comments. Too bad, that's the package you get.......I cannot understand ANY parent would allow a TV camera in the children's bedrooms. If its too hot to handle the comments that don't see kate as "wonderful" I say, get the production crew out and GET A REAL JOB!!!! I wonder about some of these posts........

put yourself in Kate's shoes

I have to say, I am quite proud of how Kate is with Madi. Sure, Madi is a handful. But Kate doesn't have time to appease ANYONE in the family for the pure sake of appeasing them. We don't see everything on the show and Madi is just Madi. The fact that Kate is so personal with her and knows what Madi needs to calm down is amazing. We have to think about how each child is different and how each child acts and reacts differently to different situations. Is Madi a brat? YEs, has she been groomed that way? I don't think so- Besides- when the camera is off we don't see how Kate really disciplines her. She probably just doesn't want to come off as a too hard. you all need to get lives- I respect that J&K don't really CARE what you think- Let's put a camera in your houses- you psychos

I enjoy this show. If you don't like it, please just turn the channel. I can't figure why everyone has to be so critical of one another. They are doing the best they can with their children and I think that they are doing a wonderful job.

i have to start by saying i agree with every one who has stated madi is a complete total brat who kate lets by with everything and puts her so obviously above cara how sad it should be cara being patted on the back she is much much more well behaved and it is put out to the world to see every monday night kate feels sorry for madi couse she thinks its been hard on her haveing to except all the nnew brothers and sisters at once well what about cara who has to except them all p l us seeing her on twin siater put above and before her when she is the good one madi is going to selfish snotty wild out of control and will be one to only think of herself instead of bbabying her and feeling bad and feeling sorry for her make her except it she has many more years with them and if kate continues letting her by with her selfish out of control winny attitude she is going to raise a respectful adult in madi and kate you should be ashamed of how you treat jon exspecially on live tv consider yoursel

GWOP has some really interesting info on this. AND Jons dad helped support them financially when he was alive. What family member supports them now? Their children.

So has anyone ever noticed that in almost every episode they say something along the lines of 'we could not have done this or gotten through this without the help of others.' They know they would not be where they are now if they didn't have the help and donations of others. There are many couples that act the same way they do but since they are on a reality tv show where everything is edited the viewers tend to criticize anything and everything. Jon and Kate know they are lucky, they say it all the time.

kmee - you've got to be kidding!! We invade them?????? what do you suppose those camera's at the house are??? they are the ones who are invading their children's privacy!!!! And yes, I feel very comfortable calling Mady a brat,...have you seen the way she speaks to people, let alone her siblings and adults around her. A child needs to be taught to be civil and NOT rude, I am not blaming her for that.....remember children learn what they live and are taught!! you call it a "priviledge" to watch them..??? get real girl if that's a privledge...as I said - I use to be a supporter being the mom of many...as I said the show now shows me what I DO NOT want to do......there used to be a law I believe the "Jackie Coogan" law???? Parents making money off their kids.....

I LOVE JON & KATE+8. AND PERSONALY I AM APPAULLED THAT SOMEONE WOULD BE SO HARD ON MADY.[ remember she is a child] TO CALL HER A BRAT IS JUST CRUEL!!! SHE IS WHO SHE IS !!!!! SO LAY OFF.ALSO WHY IS IT ANYONES BUISNESS WHAT THE FAMILYS FINANCES ARE. COME ON PEOPLE!!!! IS IT NOT ENOUGH THAT WE INVADE THIER PRIVACY NOW WE CHOOSE TO TELL THEM HOW TO LIVE THIER LIFE.MAKE A CHOICE EITHER ENJOY WHAT WE HAVE BEEN PRIVILIGED TO BE A PART OF OR TURN THE CHANNEL.WORK ON YOUR OWN LIFE..
