Need your dog to look festive for photos? Or maybe you just want to see him enjoying the holidays, too. Either way, your pooch can look like a Christmas pooch with just a few items you make in a snap. Some of the stuff needed for these cute canine costumes you’ll likely already have at home.

If your dog is the type that doesn’t like clothing, but will allow you to put something on his head, you can make all sorts of Christmas hats or headpieces. You want any head garment to be lightweight and comfortable for the dog. Use little girl’s headbands, which work really well, to make antlers, a Christmas hat or other designs.

Cut felt to cover the headband and use hot glue to attach it. Cut antler shapes from cardboard then use white glue to attach fabric or felt, cut to match the pattern of the cardboard shapes. After attaching the fabric to the cardboard, stitch or glue onto the headband. Instead of the antlers, cover a headband in red or white fabric, then attach a Santa hat you purchased or made yourself.

Make a simple cape for your pooch by using a piece of red felt, velvet or other fabric. Cut a piece of fabric to fit around the pooch’s neck, with a few inches to spare. Add velcro so the collar will be easy to put on or remove. Glue or stitch on fur, boas, or another white trim. Make a matching hat, if desired.

Many dogs don’t like clothing but will allow you to place things on their heads and ankle areas. This makes it easy to give your dog a costume that’s cute but unobtrusive to him or her. Cut strips of fur, or red fuzzy fabric, then use elastic or velcro to secure. Place one of the fur “collars” around each ankle, one around the neck, if he’ll let you, and add a matching red hat with white furry pom-pom on the end.
