Comic books and heroes have long been a part of humanity and this is undoubtedly a force within each and every one of us that drives us to either create or defend these heroes, both good and evil, fiction and non-fiction. Many people, however, do not realize exactly how vital superheroes are to our existence and to the continuance of our survival as a functional society on earth. Over the years, advancements in technology and science have led many Americans to question their beliefs and their faiths. Previous universal truths no longer hold as the gap between the known and unknown diminishes, leaving many people without a guiding light in their lives. Each living completely lost, having no direction of course correction and no hope of any savior in site.

Superheroes are the saviors these people have been looking for-they just don't realize it.

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's... well, you know the rest. Everyone does. Superman and superheroes alike have saturated the entertainment world. There are superhero lunchboxes and backpacks, coloring books and stickers, and videogames and big blockbuster superhero movies. Ask any young boy or girl you pass if they like Batman, Spider-man, or Superman and their answer will likely be, "Yeah, I love him! I've seen his movie 10 times and I have shoes and bed sheets with him on them! He's my favorite! In 2002 Spider-man topped the yearly box office raking in a record income of $403,706,375, placing Spider-man at the number seven spot on the U.S. top ten highest grossing movies of all time (Box Office Mojo, 2007.) Since then, over fifteen other superhero movies have been made. The most notable ones being Spider-man 2, X-men 3: The Last Stand, Batman Begins, and Superman Returns.The entertainment industry has become completely oversaturated with superheroes, yet we still can't seem to get enough of these high flying, spandex wearing, bad guy butt kicking characters.
