For Shabby Chic and Vintage kitchens, even magnets on the refrigerator can have a little charm. These adorable tin can alphabet magnets are super simple to create and even make wonderful gifts.

For this project, you will need:

- Tin can

- Work gloves

- Can opener

- Tin snips

- Small hammer

- Medium grit sandpaper

- Large letter shaped stencils

- Black permanent marker

- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White

- Scissors

- Vintage themed scrapbook paper

- Mod Podge or other decoupage medium

- Sponge brush

- Popsicle stick

- Acrylic finishing spray

- Magnetic tape

The most important thing to remember when creating your tin can alphabet magnets is to use extreme caution when handling the tin. Wear work gloves whenever possible to prevent serious injury from the sharp edges. Use an can opener to remove the bottom of the can. (You should now have just an open cylinder shape.)

Use the tin snips to carefully cut a straight line down the can vertically. Unroll the tin can and smash the tin flat using a small hammer. With a black permanent marker and large letter shaped stencils, trace your designs. Cut out each letter carefully with tin snips. Sand the edges of the tin smooth with medium grit sandpaper. Spray each tin letter, front and back, with a thick coat of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Dry overnight.

Trace the same letter shapes onto vintage themed scrapbook paper. Cutout the letters with scissors. Adhere the letters to the tin can shapes with a bit of Mod Podge or other decoupage medium with the sponge brush. Smooth the paper with the popsicle stick or your fingers so that the tin can rippling shows through. (This adds an extra special amount of charm to the magnets when completed.) Allow the decoupage tin to dry fully.

Spray each magnet with a couple coats of acrylic finishing spray. Dry overnight before adding magnetic tape strips to the back of each magnet.
