As a college student in 1984, my art class took a field trip to the art district in Chicago. We looked at some objet's d'art, but mostly we ate and drank. We had to; Chicago has the most tantalizing array world foods in the smallest square miles possible. We sampled Diana's Opaa Restaurant, which is Chicago's crown jewel. But we enjoyed loads of other ethnic foods as well. With a then prospective German husband, I enjoyed some fabulous German cuisine as well. Muskegon and Grand Rapids, my old stomping grounds both had superior German Restaurants back in the day ( The Schnitzlebank and Bavarian Inn) so I was prepared to be unimpressed, even in Chicago, the smorgasbord of the mid-west. I was pleasantly however. Here are the top best German restaurants in Chicago.

Glunz Bavarian Haus on Lincoln Ave., is a must for your Deutch abendessen (evening meal). Louis Glunz came to Chicago in 1879 just after the Great Fire. He set up shop in the Columbian World's Expo area ( a complete 'city' created just for the Fair from pasteboard). Glunz Bavarian Haus has the usual German dishes: sauerbraten (roast pork) is my favorite, weiner schnitzel, different kinds of spatzel (noodles), wurstsalat (sausage salad), kartofelsalat (potato salad), but there are some lesser familiar dishes as well. Smoked Atlantic Salmon with dill sauce, salted white radishes, jaegerfandl (forest something, my German is not great) and liver dumpling soup (leberknodl suppe) which delicious! They have a complete menu all home-made.
