The purpose of this research paper is to find out whether cheerleading is really a sport. We chose this topic because of our involvement and interest in cheerleading. Our definition of cheerleading is a sport in which both males and females use both gymnastics and cheering at the same time. People do not believe it is a sport but a recreational activity. We feel that we should prove that it is a sport for the sake of all cheerleaders.

Cheerleading is often referred to as a recreational activity. We can say it was a recreational activity when it first started, but it has outgrown that category. Our topic is "Is Cheerleading a Sport?" We want to prove that cheerleading is a sport because to us it is. It is now widely known through out America and is all over ESPN. Cheerleading should officially be considered a sport.

Cheerleading started during a football game at Princeton. The crowd was chanting loudly and together for their team. While no one is exactly sure about the date, it is said to have started in the 1880s. After that, cheering for your team became popular and organizations started to form. 100 years later competitions for cheerleading started. These competitions where not about who could scream the loudest and who could make up the best chant, but it became about who can do the best stunts and have the most solid pyramid. Coordination is key for cheerleaders.
The dictionary states that a sport is an activity involving physical activity and competing. That means that you have to do something athletic and you have to compete. Things like basketball and football are easily defined as sports because of what they involve. The definition of cheerleading, "a recreational activity in which persons cheer for their home team" seems to fit better with how cheerleading was when it started at Princeton. A recreational activity is defined as an activity someone does in their spare time and does not have much impact.

Jonas - a) Yes, cheerleaders do get the crowd excited and wear the same clothes (by the way, "wearing the same clothes" refers to a uniform). Last time I checked, every other sports team gets the crowd excited and wears uniforms as well. b) You also say that a sport is played between two or more teams. We compete against multiple teams in order to be the best. This sport isn't just about standing on the sidelines supporting teams that insult us like you're doing. We compete for national championships. We risk more injury than any other sport (go ahead, check the statistics). We get recruited for college scholarships. And, in some cases, we put in more practice hours than any other team. So next time you feel like calling us "pornstars" and "strippers", why don't you get off your lazy ass and see what these "dumb whores" actually do. Stop being a whiny little bitch. It's not our fault we have the heart and athletic skills many people can only dream about.

uhm excuse me cheerleading is a sport. Especially if it considers the skill of gymnastics, which is a sport, the skill of lifting people, the flexibility, and so on. Wow ohkayy yeahh football you run and tackle people. Well guess what cheerleaders run too we practice everyday for 2-3 hours sometimes twice a day sometimes even 6 hours a day. We throw people football players throw balls. Maybe if you actually had some balls youd try and do the things cheerleaders do and i know for a fact that you would NOT last.

You have no idea what we go through! we are not whores! we have those uniforms for certain reasons! not to be whores! you have no life and no reason to even live! if any cheerleader knows you or meets you they should kick your ass! NO LIE you need to friggin get over it! we are not whores. we are a SPORT!

#1 those rude comments were so not necessary, and it is very insulting to cheerleaders who work just as hard as any other student-athlete. According to the dictionary, a sport is defined as an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. Cheerleading sounds like it fits that definition to me. And I am not a cheerleader if you are wondering, I'm a basketball player.

Ok notice the only one who this its a sport are cheerleaders... what a surprise... it is NOT a sport. If cheerleading is a sport then so is being a stripper. They get the crowd exsited and wear the same clothes. Also lifting someone who wieghs 100 pounds over your head and "smiling" requires a few benchpresses at most. A sport is a competitive game played between two or more teams. Not a bunch of girls dressed like whores that shke their ass for half their dance then pick up the skrawny midget over their head, calling it difficult. I don't care that you've been a cheerleader since 6th grade, because after you dropout of highschool or barly pass, wichever happens, you'll still become either a stripper or porn star. Dumb Whores...

So there is a comment about someone playing basketball and how hard it is... and i agree basetball is hard... i have played basketball for 7 years and i did softball 5 and i did track last year and for the past 3 years i have been a CHEERLEADER! So when people r going around saying that cheering isnt a sport becuase they dont do anyhting its really annoying because cheerleaders are proably in more shape then any other sport... It takes a lot of hard work to be a cheerleader... we needed another back for this season and i had to do soooo much lifting weights and things to build up the strength in my arms.. im kinda tall and skinny... but im in shape... so the next person who wants to rag on cheering just try it... and the other day at practice we did jumps and holy crap we have to do 20 of each jump and your sore after... its like running suisides in basket ball....
