Laying sod or installing turf is a quick and simple way to have a lush, green lawn in a single afternoon.

What is sod (turf)?

Sod is grass that is grown in a field and cut into 1 inch (2.5cm) thick strips. These strips include the grass, the roots and some soil. To create a lawn, you simply lay the sod strips side by side across the area you wish to cover.

Most sod is a mix of several grass varieties. For example, when you purchase Tall fescue, it will be a blend of several Fescues. If you want a single variety, you should seed the lawn.

Why use sod?

The advantage of sod is that you can instantly create a lawn at just about any time during the growing season. Because the sod already has an established root system and mature grass, you can install sod even during the heat of summer.

Sod strips are living plants that need special care because their roots are exposed to the elements. If there is any delay between buying and planting sod, keep the strips in a cool, shaded place and water them lightly. You should also water the strips as you are laying the sod to keep them supple and healthy.

Sod can be an immediate solution to erosion and will also block weeds from gaining a foothold in a bare and troublesome garden area.

How to lay Sod:

The first step to laying a lawn is to purchase quality sod. Look for seed-free, moist rolls. For the best results, buy from a reputable local nursery that can tell you exactly which farm the sod came from. The closer you are to the source, the fresher the sod will be.

Prepare the foundation before your sod is delivered. Add plenty of organic material, such as compost, to the area, and dig it in at least 6 inches (15 cm) deep. Get rid of rocks and always order a little extra sod for patching.

When to lay sod:

The best time to lay sod is in early spring, so that the lawn has an entire season to grow and become established. You can, however, sod at any time during the growing season.

To lay sod on flat areas you will need:

  • Sod
  • Shovel
  • Garden rake
  • Utility knife
  • Well-rotted manure or compost
  • Lawn-starter fertilizer.
