Williamsburg on the Lake apartments in Valparaiso Indiana is beautiful on the exterior. Groundskeepers do an excellent job of trimming bushes, mowing lawns, and taking care of the hundreds of flowers they plant each spring, but as the old saying goes, a book cannot be judged by its cover, and apartments are no exception. I once praised this Valparaiso Indiana community of apartments and townhouses, but that was shortly after moving in. After living at Williamsburg on the Lake apartments in Valparaiso Indiana for several months, I realized that looks are truly deceiving, and it is of the utmost importance to carefully consider the interior as well as the exterior of apartments in comparison to the cost before signing on the dotted line. Unfortunately other aspects of apartment living can only be discovered after moving in and experiencing what life is really like inside and out.

Before moving into Williamsburg on the Lake apartments in Valparaiso Indiana, with reluctance of management, my husband and I were given the opportunity to see the condition of our apartment prior to maintenance doing any of the required cleaning, repairs, and painting. It was obvious the people who lived in the apartment moved out without doing any type of cleaning. The carpeting along the baseboards was littered with the shells of dead bugs, the downstairs toilet was black inside, and the entire apartment was a mess to say the least. I hoped the apartment would be in much better condition upon moving in less than a week later, and surprisingly it was. Considering how it looked before moving in, the apartment was much cleaner, and it smelled fresh. However, although we were told the carpets had been cleaned, dead bugs still littered the carpeting along the baseboards, and chocolate remained on the carpeting upstairs, but it was otherwise in move-in condition.

I wanted to say one more thing... I loved the maintenance crew and the grounds keepers. They're all nice people, and they do an excellent job there - especially Joe and Tony. They were my favorites, but I eventually saw the downside to apartment life, and it was time to move on.

I thought I preferred renting since it was maintainence-free living, but it depends on where you live. I would have stayed much longer if they followed their own rules at that place. Thanks for all of your comments.

Great article. I know an appartment has disadvantages but there are also many advantages. You need to consider good what is best for you. I live in an appartment and I prefer living in an appartment instead of a house.

I've never lived in an apartment complex, and not sure I'd ever want to! Especially this one....

This is why I like living in a house. You have more say in what you can do.

You made me remember why it might not be so bad putting up with regular home maintenance. This brought back memories of apartment life. I'm glad you were able to get out of that place. You wrote about it very well, though:)

Wow. This is scary. We are moving from AZ to TX next month, renting a townhome sight unseen! Hope it turns out better than your experience. I, too, am a big time "follow the rules" person! Great reporting, as always, Kim!
