Little kids and ball bats simply don't mix, whether they're at a party or not. Pinatas are lots of fun, and every kid wants one, but they can be dangerous, that's for sure. There's an easy and safe pinata you can make, though, and your kids will be safe while having just as much fun. The pinata is made from an ordinary cereal box. The cereal box can be decorated in an elaborate manner or can be left looking like a cereal box. You can use fabrics and scrapbook paper to make the cereal box into Spongebob Squarepants or another cartoon character. Sometimes you can even find cloth that has cartoon character images which can be cut and attached to the box.
The cereal box, when empty, will make a magnificent pinata. Remove the inner wrapper and fill the box with candy. Don't overstuff the box, though, or the weight of the candy will force open the flaps of the cereal box. If you need to, though, you can later tape the flaps shut - barely.
Poke two holes in the bottom - now the top - of the pinata. Use a piece of cord to make a hanger for the pinata. Push one cord end into one hole and the opposite end of the cord in the other hole. Reach into the box and tie the ends into knots to keep them from pulling out. Other things you can use besides cord include ribbon, tough string or even yarn. Use the hanger to suspend the pinata from a tree branch or other area.
You'll attach many pieces of yarn, ribbon or cord all over the bottom of the pinata - where the flaps are. One piece of ribbon or yarn will be the magic one that will allow the candy to spill out. The other ribbon pieces are bogus. The one that will open the box must be attached in a certain way to allow the flaps to open when the cord is pulled.
Open the flaps and attach one end of a piece of cord to the inside of the top flap. Bring the string on out of the flap and allow to hang long. The other strings or cords will be simply taped to the outside of the flap. Attach many ribbons or just enough for the amount of kids which will be in attendance.
