Shipshewana, Indiana is a very unique and impressive vacation spot. I live about 40 minutes from Shipshewana and it is still one of my favorite places to go. It is like stepping back into the past.

Shipshewana is known for the Amish or plain folk as many refer to them. My maternal grandmother was Amish until she was 7 years old. I have a bond with them even though I wouldn't want to live the way they do.

You can enjoy the beauty of the Shipshewana, Indiana countryside on your way to town. We locals call it Shipshe. The scenery is breathtaking. You will see Amish farmers plowing with Clydesdale and Belgium farm horses. Many ride their bicycles and buggies on the roads. It can be dangerous for them and you so you need to drive carefully keeping an eye out for these plain people.

You can stop at roadside stands and go to some of the local farmhouses to buy fresh homemade pies, bread, noodles and other homemade Amish goods. There is nothing any more beautiful or artistic than a handmade Amish quilt. They can be very expensive because they are usually completely handmade. If you love quality furniture you can find Amish made furniture that is of the finest quality. These are just some of the things you can find on the way to Shipshewana.

Downtown Shipshewana has 100 stores. You will go past the Shipshewana flea market on your way to downtown if you can resist stopping there first. If you go to the flea market you better plan on staying there for the day. There are many bed and breakfasts places that you can spend nights in so you can enjoy more time in Shipshewana.

If shopping is not your thing, you can spend time at the new indoor Water Park. It is affordable with family accommodations all year around. It is called Splash Universe Indoor Water Park Resort Hotel.

If you love shopping or just looking you can find antique stores, fabric stores, restaurants, and everything that you can image. You can also visit the art stores, such as DiVine Gallery Garden and Gifts, and the Galerina. They have art and crafts as well as garden plants and herbs.

I think I've been to almost 40 of the 50 States but Indiana has so far not been one of them. It sounds like I am missing out on some great places though. Hopefully in the future...

My cousins loved Indiana because of the cheaper gas/ cigarettes. They lived in Chicago which has some of the highest taxes on both..

I was born in Indy and saw quite a bit of the state but never made it to Shipshewana. I'll have to make a trip up that way sometime! Sounds just fascinating!
