Para-educators are in high demand in many school districts around the country to help support teachers with their classes and assist in covering the goals set out in the teacher's lesson plans for the day. If you are considering working as a para-educator at your local school district or further afield, you should first look to see if you can work as a substitute para-educator before you commit to a job as a full-time para-educator only to discover later on that you have made a mistake and that working as a para-educator does not meet your expectations for career advancement.

Work with Different Age Groups

One of the many benefits of working as a substitute para-educator is that you will often get the opportunity to rotate from class to class and grade to grade, which means getting to work with many different age groups from pre-school, kindergarten and middle school aged children. If you are not yet sure what age groups you would prefer to work with as a para-educator, then working as a substitute para-educator will allow you to gain experience in working with different age ranges of children. As a substitute para-educator, you will get to see whether you have the patience and stamina to handle the repetitive nature of instilling school discipline and social values into pre-schoolers or if you prefer to reason with a 10-year-old on an arithmetic problem that they are struggling with.

Does the School Environment Inspire You?

Another reason why it is beneficial to start out as a substitute para-educator is to see if you feel inspired and fulfilled by the school environment. Do you feel that you are free to express yourself? Are your views and opinions taken on board and respected by the teachers and other members of the school faculty? Do you actually like the work that you do with the children and teachers? Working as a substitute para-educator can really inspire you to further your career in education or it can convince you that working with children is not for you after all.

Takeaways
  • Working as a substitute para-educator will allow you to work with different age ranges
  • Do you feel inspired by the school environment?
  • Subbing can help you to decide if working as a full-time para-educator is really for you

Hi Sophie--good to hear from you again! Very good article on para-professional subs. You wouldn't believe how little they are paid here in this part of the country--less than $10/hr. Thanks for your comment (and reassurance) on my article about MALTA's CLIMATE: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/889239/moving_abroad_how_to_meet_other_expatriates.html?cat=16------------Ilene An American in Malta.com

good tip- the theory and reality of working in schools can be quite different and some people don't have the temperament for it
