Review: Hugh Jackman's Movie "The Prestige"
Too Many Simple Issues to Be an Enjoyable Film

Due to my overall disappointment in this film, I will not spend a lot of time on this article. Those of you who have actually seen it may understand why already, however I shall expound below for those of you lucky enough to read this before spending your well-earned (I'm sure) cashola.A friend of mine suggested this film around the same time that I read something about it. Seemed "clean enough" for me to watch - meaning that sexual content and unnecessary use of foul language/glorified violence was basically non-existent. He had already seen it once and held firm to me that it was a good film and would see it again if I chose to go myself. So we went.
So now that you know the good part, I'll move on.
Jackman is a good actor - this movie was no exception to the rule. The supporting cast - so are they all, all good actors. No problem with the visuals or audio - even the costumes and settings were nice and neat. No, none of these were issues, but unfortunately for this film there was one thing that it did miss:
A) A good writer, or
B) Someone to recognize the story's flaws and correct them
The problems start early on. The "main" magic trick requires the lovely assistant (Jackman's wife in the movie) to be bound by her hands and feet, and then dropped into a tank of water. After the curtain falls, she must work her way out of the rope that binds her, release the fake lock and climb out of the water tank to safety. After she does this, the curtain raises and TA-DAH! Magic has been done. Prior to this particular display, the magician asks for 2 members of the audience to participate. Jackman's character as well as Christian Bale's character, who are both "in" on the trick, are always "picked" to come up and "volunteer."
Here is where the story ceased to be even slightly entertaining.

Takeaways
- Are today's screenwriters and filmmakers actually "thinking" about the story they are telling?
- Reactions in a story should be the result of a good reason - not just because a writer wants it to.
- The characters' actions reveal something too painfully obvious to ignore: bad writing.
Did You Know?
Factual errors: Borden mentions that a "penny" could be slipped into the barrel of the pistol used for the bullet catch trick. English pennies of this period were substantial and wide, much wider than the barrel of the pistol being used by Borden could accommodate.Resources
