In the early 90’s when I was still an arcade goer the video game world had been taken over by Capcom’s Street Fighter. In a effort to compete with Capcom, Midway came out with their own fighting game called Mortal Kombat. The two games battled for several years and many gamers debated which game was the better of the two. Like the rest of the gaming world I also got caught up with the two fighting games at least for a little bit. I played the first couple of Street Fighter games and the first couple of Mortal Kombat games. But while a lot of people continued to buy every single version of these two games I moved on to something else once I realized that not much changed from game to game. They would add a few characters but other than that it was basically the same game.
So my days of playing fighting games halted while I switched my attention towards role-playing games and sports games. It was close to ten years before I would play another fighting game (besides wrestling games), 2004’s Mortal Kombat: Deception. I have to admit that I had a ton of fun of playing it. I didn’t go out and start playing fighting games again but I enjoyed it enough that I decided to check out this year’s Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.
For those of you who might not know about the Mortal Kombat series here is the premise for the games. The Mortal Kombat tournament was created by the Elder Gods as a way for other realms to defend themselves against Outworld after it grew too powerful. A realm may declare Mortal Kombat on another realm, if they wish to invade it and conquer it. Once one party declares Mortal Kombat, the other party may not refuse. A tournament ensues, where the combatants will be knocked out until the reigning champion does battle with the challenger.
