In past decades the industrial trade put economics before ecology; however, economic growth should never come before ecological responsibility. It is our job to do all we can to preserve the condition of the environment for the next generation, as it will be their job to do the same for the generations to come. Concerning ecology, sustainable development allows us to make a living without damaging the earth or wasting her resources.

I have asked a few people about their thoughts on the concept of sustainable development and they just gave me a blank look. Many of the people I talked to didn't even recognize the term. It's really no surprise that people haven't heard of sustainable development because as of yet it isn't a phrase that is used much. They know the word green; if you are thinking green, you are employing the concepts of sustainable development, because changing from using products with chemicals that will harm the environment to green products, you are taking measures to preserve your environment. If everyone took measures to preserve their immediate environment their collective efforts would hand the earth to the next generation in better condition than it is in now.

Did You Know?
Changing to an energy efficient light bulb such as a CFL will save 700 pounds of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the atmosphere during the lifetime of that bulb.

In Peru we saw a lot of motorcycle engine run trikes with covered beds; when you are really poor you find a way to move things at reasonable and more sustainable methods. :) Sheri

excellent article, Charlene..and frankly I have no idea what Donald is referring to.."tree hugging"..if this is tree hugging..then I'm a tree hugger and I'm proud to be...we all have to wake up and smell the air that is polluted with our greed and carelessness!...collectively we can do it...

Nope. I disagree completely. Bad idea. Nothing personal. I just believe in rational truth and not tree-hugger hysterionics and power-grabs by elitist fraudulent politicians and cheaters.

Charlene, while I use CFL bulbs, I do wonder WHAT we'll be plugging our electric cars into? And how will that energy be generated? Here in California we have been told our electric bills are going up 30 % TO START WITH. If you're living on a fixed income, that will be hard to absorb. Your article was well written, girl.

Charlene, YOu are a talented artist. I love that picture. You did a wonderful job explaining greenhouse gases. No, I have never heard of sustainable development. After I saw Al Gore's film, "The Inconvenient Truth," is when I begn to understand the meaning of global warming. If you haven't seen it, it's a must.
