Too Good to Be True

Earlier this week I wrote an article on quackery and health fraud. Even though the article outlined some warning signs of such products or providers, some of my patients asked for specific examples. In today's article I can give one such example, in the herbal medicine that fixes hernias. The product advertizes on well-trusted health information web-sites but that in itself is no proof against quackery and health fraud. Let's look at some of its published features on its official website:

"Welcome to the official website of xxxxxxx: The amazing 100% guaranteed treatment for Hernias that is bound to leave you amazed!" (This spells TV advertizing type of copywriting rather than health information)

"No matter how long you have suffered from Hernias we assure you that with use of xxxxxxx you will regain your condition faster than any other solution currently available." (Hernia type and severity not specified, alternative treatment not specified but every condition will be fixed in a way better than every alternative)

"xxxxxxx is an established treatment and produces time tested results." (But no such results stated)

"Contra-Indications: No contra-indications are established." (This seems too good to be true and hence is probably untrue.)

Promotion by unspecified testimonials:

"Your organization is very professional and thank you for the continued support. I never thought it would work so well." - xxxxx - Florida

"I can't thank you enough" - xxxx - NY

"All I can say is amazing! I was about to give up after trying so many products." - xxxxx - California

Again, look out for medicine that fixes everything, is better than anything, amazes every user, and has no contraindications or side effects. Before I go, just a few words about hernias. Conventional medicine believes that hernias need to be repaired surgically. The recent advances involve the material used to make the prosthetic meshes for repair and minimally invasive approach to put the meshes in. There has been no scientific evidence to show that hernias are fixed by any medicine.
