"Ravenous" (1999), tells the story of Captain John Boyd (Guy Pearce). Captain Boyd receives a promotion after defeating the enemy commanding officer in a battle during the Mexican-American War, but the general realizes it wasn't bravery, but an act of cowardice that got him where he was. He is then given a backhanded promotion and is sent to Fort Spencer where he is third in command. At the fort there are two Indians, George and his sister, Martha, Chaplain Toffler, Reich, a tough soldier, Cleaves, a drugged-out cook, and Knox, a frequent drunk. A frostbitten, Scottish stranger named Colquhoun wanders to the fort and recovers almost instantly after being bathed. He then tells the story of how one of his party members, Ives, began eating people to survive once they were trapped in a cave. The soldiers at the fort must fulfill their duty and investigate the cave even though George warns that Colquhoun has admitted to eating human flesh and maybe a Windigo, a ravenous cannibalistic creature. Ravenous is in a word, brilliant. From the great dialogue to the creepy soundtrack, this movie delivers the chills.
